Training Hike #3 Austin/Furnace - Jones Run/Doyles River (19.9 mi)

Dave's beautiful and classic training hike for our Extreme Hike Series....so let's have some fun (2 water crossings, so bring water shoes and towel, along with lots of waterfalls!) while we are getting ourselves ready for the Presi and Half Presi Traverse, Devil's Path, and Great Range Traverse Extreme hikes this year!  This is the next in our series of training hikes before these events with both Full and Half Presi Hikes.  Pace will be such we finish in a reasonable and safe time, but we will not be sparing the horses either!  This hike will cover Shenandoah National Park from top to bottom and back on BOTH east and west sides for Full Presi Training and the west side for Half Presi Training.  One of the nice features of this setting is you get to see and feel the incredible diversity of Blue Ridge Hollows and why the old timers revered them so much!  The Full Presi hike will be covering Austin and Furnace Mountain Trails on the West and Jones and Doyle's River Trails on the East, while the Half Presi hike will cover Austin and Furnace Mountain trails on the west side with a nice stop at Black Rocks.

Detailed route map with description and elevation profile (click here)

Half Presi Map from Hiking Upward web site: Start at same Parking lot and time as Full Presi. We will go up Austin Mtn and down Furnace Mtn.

http://www.hikingupward.com/SNP/AustinFurnaceMountains/images/Map.pdf

Be sure to print a copy of the route map found at the above link and bring it with you to the hike!

Water. Bring 2-3 liters of water. This should get you through the first half of the hike. We will refill at the mid-point waterfall. Please indicate if you are bringing a water filter so that we will know that we are covered in that respect.

Food. Think about the "normal" day hikes you have done in the past (10-12 miles) and how much trail food you brought for them and double that.

Clothing. An extra pair of socks is always recommended. Check the weather report prior to the hike and come prepared. If there is even a remote chance of rain, be sure to bring a rain shell.

Other Gear. Headlamp with extra batteries (probably not needed but you should always carry one). Sunscreen and sunglasses. Whistle. Compass. Map. When in doubt, consult one of the readily available "ten essentials" lists.

REI's Ten Essentials List (click here)

Transportation. We will meet at the McDonalds at Warrenton, VA at 5:45 am, coordinate car pools, and depart for the trailhead at 6:00 am SHARP. For those that it is more convenient to do so, you can meet at the trailhead [masked],[masked]). Be sure to arrive at the trailhead early enough so that you are ready to start the hike at 8:00 am SHARP. I am travelling from Fredericksburg and plan to do this.

After-hike Meal. Those that have the time to do so will stop in Harrisonburg after the hike for a group dinner. Location to be posted ... stay tuned.

Some of us will be at a Cabin on Saturday night after our Frozen Waterfall hike, so will meet the group at the trail head.  There is a camping option with us on Saturday night so if interested contact Jim.

My first ever 10+ mile hike. I must really thank the help i got throughout the hike from all the members of the group.
Neal, Steve, Joffrey really took good care of me, not to get lost and eaten by bears, though i was really slow, they even taught me how to be better in hikes and not getting tired. No matter how much I say I really can't thank you enough.
Finally this hike filled me with confidence and learned many new things. Hope to see you all soon. Thank you all :).

Raj, Congratulations on your first 10+ hike. So glad you joined us and look forward to seeing you on future adventures. You can not believe how fast you will get after a few of these.... particularly once the bears are eating berries and the snakes are eating us!!! LOL.

Beautiful day. The snow, streams, frozen waterfall ... but most of all the incredible sounds of the wind on the final long, long downhill trek. Thanks everyone for making it wonderful.

    Julia, Larke, Jenn;

    Fellow DC residents.
Do any of you have a car? Will you be driving from DC? Wondering if I can ride with you and share costs? I can cab to meet you somewhere in DC at that early hour.

    Best,

    Patricia

I'll be driving from DC, but spending the night out there Sun. night, so I probably won't be doing you any good.

I will meet with Iru and Patricia at C-ville and then to the trail head, but they will not stay for dinner so I need a ride to Harrisonburg after the hike for dinner and pick up a box. Please let me know if you can take me to Harrisonburg after the hike and then C-ville.

Thinking of joining for this, but as Patricia I don't have a car, would any of you be carpooling from DC? If not the option of renting a car is also on my radar, if anyone would like to share cost please let me know.

    • Jenne World T.

I would like to join you, and just emailed you. Please check and the email and let me know. Thanks.

Hi Jenne, sure we can carpool from Centreville Park and Ride, I will be picking up Patricia at 4:45 and we should be able to arrive to Centreville around 5:20/5:25 We would then head directly to the trailhead, to ensure we get there with time to be ready to start hiking at 8. Please note that we will be heading back to DC right after the hike, not staying after for dinner. Will send you an email with my contact details

Any interest in a subgroup doing most of this hike, then peeling off to make it a backpacking trip? I'd like to get a night out in the woods this weekend, and probably put a few more miles under my feet.

Jim, Any room in the cabin if some of us from DC head over the evening before?

    January 15, 2014

  • Kirsten

Sorry but I am headed to the Maryland mountains (Backbone) this weekend to help build a cabin with friends. Enjoy the hike and stop to smell a few of the roses along the trail.
