Roaring Plains Winter Backpacking Trip

  • Mar 7, 2014 · 7:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is one of my favorite Winter trips to enjoy great views, amazing array of colors, wind, fog, rain, and deep snow!  So come prepared for the real deal (High Country Winter Backpacking) as we go for a snowshoe backpacking trip once more, so 'nuff said!

Be prepared to walk in the dark on Friday night, so only fun, upbeat people allowed that are strong backpackers!  If you have not done a trip with me before, please contact me...had to learn this one the hard way as I want it to be great for us both!  Organizers and seasoned vets of the group are always welcome of course!  We will walk up the mountain on Friday night in snowshoes if needed and camp where the wind is strong and wild and do the Canyon Rim, so not for the faint of heart, so people must be vetted for this trip and it will be limited to only 8 people per group since it is a wilderness area.  Map information here:

Please print off a copy and bring it in a zip lock bag.

So saddle up for one of the wildest, wooliest places left in the Mid-Atlantic...the top of the Continental Divide in our region...the one and only Roaring Plains!

Simon, Keith and I just left Vienna Metro. We will be in Centerville as traffic will allow.

    March 7, 2014

  • Mario

Can I get a ride with someone still?

    March 7, 2014

    • Mario

Keith is out, so no ride to WV unless I can ride with someone??

      March 7, 2014

    • Mario

Was on my way out the door, but not sure now??

      March 7, 2014

  • Simon

I should be getting to Vienna station at about 18:50. Sorry for the delay. [masked]

2 1/2 mile 1200' climb on Friday night, so quite easy....for one of my trips.

    • Jim N.

We can talk about it tonight. We can do either 6-8 on Saturday with our packs or 12 day hiking.

      March 7, 2014

    • Keith

Sorry this hike is not what I thought it was going to be.. I will give the guys rides to dunkin..but I am not going to wv

Looks like we can get away with 2 cars on this trip guys. Do we want to do a group dinner like chicken fajitas for Saturday?

Weather is looking quite good for a winter trip with lows around 25-30 and highs of 40. Partly sunny on Saturday with snow showers moving in on Saturday night and Sunday morning, so quite enjoyable!

Jim, just to confirm; from the description above it sounds like this trip will only include one night camping (Friday) and that Saturday would consist of the Canyon Rim circuit and hike back out to the trailhead. Is this accurate? Thanks.

    March 6, 2014

    • Keith

Last I heard it was "6 miles in on Friday and 13 miles on Saturday, then 6 miles out on Sunday."

I have been trying to gauge my fitness level (have taken off almost 3 months from a nearly broken ankle) as well as the group's level. I am debating about going in a different way but need to check on a few details first. Don't worry it will be a fun adventure with a great campsite.

      March 6, 2014

  • Keith

Ok, Matt, I should be passing the Vienna metro between 6:30 and 7pm. Jim, if you could chime in with the road conditions to the trail head. I have been on some WV trips where the roads are pretty rough to the trail head. My tires, suspension and nerves, aren't up for an off road workout :-)

    March 5, 2014

    • Keith

I have Simon, Mario, and Matt booked for rides... I will be stopping at the Vienna Metro between 630 and 7pm enroute to Dunkin Doughnuts, and then onto the trail head!

Thanks Keith. See you at Vienna.

I may be able to provide some rides to Centerville. I work in Gaithersburg. Friday after work around 6pm, I will be headed down 270 southbound to 495 and then catching 66 west to Centerville. I don't mind stopping off this route to pick up people. As for driving to the trail head, I can help out with that also *IF* there is no dirt road driving involved...

I would love a ride from the Vienna metro station which is right off 66 and would help you out with gas.

      March 5, 2014

    • Mario

If no dirt roads, i'd also love a ride (to trail head from Centerville) and could also help with petrol.

      March 5, 2014

  • Mario

What's up everybody!! I'd also like to put it out there that I am also intrested in catching a ride if room permits..

    March 5, 2014

    • Mario

Btw, I'd be able to meet at the centerville Dunking doughnuts, as planned.

Weather looks fairly good, highs of about 38 and lows of 23:

Like Simon, I would also be interested in carpooling and could meet at a metro station along the orange line. Push comes to shove I don't mind renting a car for the weekend and driving others out to WV.

    March 3, 2014

  • Simon

Those anyone has space? I need a ride. Could meet at any metro along the way. Thanks

I'm sorry to be missing out on this winter fun! But I can't miss celebrating my mom's birthday, and she doesn't backpack... have a great time.

I'm going to be staying in civilization this weekend. Hopefully, I'll be able to join the otter creek trip next week.

Can I join Fri and Saturday only? How difficult is the return route on Sat?

    February 4, 2014

    • Jim N.

Everyone who attempts the trail in gets lost Steve, so doing what you are asking is not advisable.

Can I join you guys for Saturday dayhike only. I would love to go for a day hike.

    Thanks.

Dolly Sods is the area below Roaring Plains. I will post a trip to Dolly Sods in a few days for late Feb. or early March

Pooja, nice try! I am also very interested in this trip but the mileage is a little bit long. My research shows that snowshoeing requires 3 times as much energy as regular hiking. Anyway, if you are not hiking on Saturday morning, are you interested in REI attic sale in Fairfax?

    Jim,
I have a group of 3-4 people interested in joining this trip. However, we would like to start earlier on Friday. Would it be OK to do that and then wait for you at the campsite?

    February 3, 2014

Let me check the weather, etc. Dmitry. Been busy attending to settlement of my totaled vehicle and purchase of a replacement.

yeah this one crept up on me....unfortunately I have made separate plans for both Saturday and Sunday so will not be able to brave the snowiness :(

    January 31, 2014

6 miles in on Friday and 13 miles on Saturday, then 6 miles out on Sunday.
