Backpacking Grayson Highlands/Mt. Rogers

Well, its finally come time this year where I can start thinking about plans for backpacking in my favorite area so far in the mid-atlantic.  Yep, its the Grayson Highlands/Mt. Rogers area in southern VA!

Alright so here are the trip details:

Friday :

- We will hit the road by 8am and hopefully get to the trail by 2pm.  We will be overnight parking our cars at the Massie Gap in Grayson Highlands State Park.

- Once there, we will start walking towards Mt. Rogers via the Wilburn Ridge Trail and AT.  (~5 miles to the summit of Mt. Rogers).

- Once reaching the summit, we will double back towards Thomas Knob Shelter where we will supply up with water and then head another mile N. bound on the AT where we will set up for camp.

Saturday:

- We will hit the trail at 8am and continue walking along the AT N. bound for about .2 miles.

- Then we'll head along the Pine Mountain Trail for about 2 miles where we'll meet back up with the AT.

- We will once more hit the AT, but head S. bound for 4 miles where we'll hit Wise Shelter.

- I know a couple areas just before, the shelter area and we will set up camp.  Water is plentiful in this area.  If we have time, we can hike around some more to explore.

Sunday:

- We'll aim start off early (so we get back to DC in a decent time) and head S. Bound on the AT for 1.9 miles were we will hit a spur trail leading to the parking lot at Massie Gap.

- After .8 miles, we will be at our cars.

- If the time is right and the weather is good, we may stop at Devil's Backbone Brewery for lunch.

Mileage splits are 5/6.2/2.7.   So we'll have lots of opportunities to take pics, explore, etc.

I expect everyone attending to have a map.  I recommend the NatGeo Map - 318 (Mount Rogers High Country)

Hi Jimmy. For now I'm still going. I might have a work conflict that I am trying hard to resolve, but I will let you know as soon as I know if anything changes.

Hi Jimmy. I just got back from a trek to Everest Base Camp (well, almost....I got sick) in Nepal. I am still dealing with a terrible cough (thanks to breathing in Yak dung) and post-trip pulmonary edema & acute mt sickness side effects. I was hoping not to cancel, but since I'm not feeling 100% , I've got to bail. Bummer b/c I've never been to Mt Rogers. Thanks anyways and have fun! I'd love to go another time!

Jimmy, I'm real sorry this isn't going to work out. I tried my best to shuffle things around on my calendar, but calendar won. Hope you have a good time down there.

I'm in a similar position to Alex and David - was on the wait list, and now have a meeting that Friday. Sadly changing my RSVP, and keeping this place on my wish list for another time.

Sorry, Jimmy, I am going to have to cancel because I signed up for the Rickett's Glen trip on the same weekend.

As much as I would like to come, I've been out of the office for personal reasons lately so I don't think I can take off Friday. I'll get back down there sometime soon!! Have a blast guys, it's magical there! So are the ponies.

    Hi Jimmy,
My apologies. I got on the waitlist for this a long time ago and have since filled up that weekend with work. Can't make it, changing my RSVP

Jimmy, I can confirm that I will be going on this trip with you. Please keep my spot.

I also just realized it's a morning start to get to the trailhead in good time. However, I'm trying to save my vacation days for future plans. Bummed I'm not going, but I know you'll have a great trip, Jimmy. Till next time.

I ignore birthdays but it turns out my wife doesn't. In the interest of conjugal bliss I regretably must forego this weekend so my birthday can be celebrated as others think it should. Enjoy.

Sorry but I literally have no free time these days so I can't commit to this and don't want to take the spot from someone. This is sure to be awesome though!

Hi Jimmy, I just realized that this trip leaves at 8 a.m. on Friday and I have some things on my calendar until about 2 that day. Is there any wiggle room on the time or do you think everyone will be leaving around 8? Sorry for the oversight!

Since it's almost a 6hr drive to the trail head, we need to leave sooner than later just so that we can get to camp before dark.

As long as they are well trained, they are welcome. Note: there are a lot of distractions for dogs here with all the ponies and cows.
