Mt. Rogers, Grayson Highlands - weekend Backpacking trip

Mount Rogers is the highest point in the state of Virginia, with a summit elevation of 5,729 feet (1,746 m) above sea level. It lies in Grayson County and Smyth County, Virginia, about 6.45 miles (10.38 km) WSW of Troutdale, Virginia, within the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and Jefferson National Forest.

The summit is most easily accessed from Grayson Highlands State Park by following the Appalachian Trail southbound for 3.5 miles (5.6 km) to a blue-blazed trail leading to the summit, which is covered by trees and marked with four National Geodetic Survey triangulation station disks; a standard station disk marked with an equilateral triangle and three standard reference disks marked with arrows pointing towards the station disk. Because the Appalachian Trail passes within a half mile of the summit, the area is especially popular with hikers.

Mount Rogers is the northernmost habitat of the high-altitude Southern Appalachian spruce-fir forests, which are found in only five other locations in the United States: the Great Smoky Mountains, the Black Mountains, the Great Balsam Mountains, Grandfather Mountain, and Roan Mountain. This forest type is one of the few remaining habitats of the Fraser fir, which is only found at high elevations, typically above 5,500 feet (1,700 m), in the southern Appalachian Mountains.

Elevation: 5,729 ft (1,746 m)
Location: Grayson / Smyth counties, Virginia.
Range: Blue Ridge Mountains

---------------------------------------------------------------------
For this 2 day trip we will maximize our time in the Mt. Rogers high country with some rock scrambling, so this will be a big highlight tour of the area but specifically to enjoy the blooming rhododendrons and azalea!. Please come prepared with good boots, socks, gaiters, etc.  Steve and I can cover some ground and I will go lighter than normal (for me) so be ready for it. Hence, buddy up with tents so we can cut down on weight as much as possible, but be ready for wind, cold and always rain.  As usual we will do a group dinner on Saturday night of Shrimp Scampi and Steak along with a selection of desserts, so will need to share the food and cooking equipment as well.  Due to the possibility of thunderstorms for group safety, come prepared for High Country Backpacking (meaning good rain gear with layers in case the temperature drops drastically).  This trip is a long backpacking trip, so we can cover more ground with our 2 days of "fun in the sun".  Be prepared to start relatively early on Saturday (maybe by 8 AM if we don't get in too late, hah!), hitting Mt. Rogers and staying along the Crest Zone until we drop back down to "pony heaven". Since we hike this area for Trail Days every year (a month before this trip), I know the trails very well, however be ready for some rock scrambling as well.  Oh, and bring $20 for dinner on Sunday on the way back at one my favorite restaurants!  ;-)  If you have not backpacked with me before, please contact me so I can determine if this is the right trip for you.  Details soon, but expect a strenuous trip of about 20 miles.

From thunderstorms, hail, bad traffic, to fog getting thicker by the minute (one of my favorites, btw), to 2 amazing dawns and days with great people and scenery with blooming rhododendron/azalea/mountain laurel that can't be beat, throw in a great camp, wildlife, group meal and a few more goodies, shake properly with good timing and you get another WB Classic! Thanks everyone and hope to see you on our next summer trip as everyone was AWESOME!

    My pre-trip report:

Sunny on Saturday with a high of 77 and low of 58 and partly sunny on Sunday with the same temperature range. There is a 30% chance of thunderstorms during the entire weekend, so be prepared and Friday's weather is the same. As far as the rhododendron being in bloom, which is the point of this trip, sadly I must report, WE NAILED IT for this weekend! So get your cameras ready for lots of pics! Weather particulars here:

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
