Let's take a road trip to Southwestern VA and go to the Mother of all Trail Festivals in Damascus, VA! This is a huge party all weekend long with gear reps, great music and fun. Details are here:
http://www.traildays.us/index.html

One of my favorite and wildest events year in and year out, so a classic WB annual event! We will hike Mt. Rogers early on Saturday morning and on Sunday can bike the Virginia Creeper Trail, which is rated the best Rail toTrail Conversion in the East, or hike Dragon's Tooth on the way back home on Sunday or any combination. Camping is $5 for the weekend and $20 per vehicle to park, details here:

http://traildays.us/index.php?id=18

We will be eating dutch oven gourmet and sampling some of the local cuisine. So chime in on the discussion I will post! This is a 6 hour drive from Centreville and a great weekend as you will be spending time with some of the best hikers/backpackers in the world and have some of the less well known, yet best gear vendors there to oogle over their latest wares! Oh and of course it is a huge party all weekend long, as usual on our trips, as those who have done it in year's past can attest! So time to saddle up for another classic annual Washington Backpacker's Meetup!

I *FINALLY* finished the Trail Days video. You can find it on my YouTube channel http://youtu.be/sgrBWLiMTyY. I didn't take a lot of actual video, so it is a little more pic heavy than I would prefer, but I hope you like it!

It was great seeing the wild ponies, hanging out with everyone and witnessing some Trail Magic with the delicious Saturday night dinner that Jim cooked up.

I had a blast! New friends and old, so many firsts - hike up Mt Rogers, drum circle, tent city, hiker parade, Brunswick stew, ponies, cattle, communal fire pit, favorite restaurant.....can't wait to get back in the spirit next year! Jim, you're awesome - thank you!

If you missed this event, you missed the wildest fun and opportunity to expand your backpacking/hiking knowledge all year with the best backpackers of 2014! The company, camp and food as always was sublime, so can't wait for next year! Viv pro die (Live for the Day at)Trail Days!

Much enjoyed the Trail Days. Still got the muchies from walking from the car to where y'all were camped and taking in all that second-hand 'aroma'?

As usual, too much fun for one weekend! Thanks so much to Jim for posting this crazy fun trip. The dinner was delicious. I loved the spirit of Trail Days (and the bongo tent!). Mt. Rogers and the Iron Mountain hikes were gorgeous.

We got a spot, but they are going quickly! We are straight behind the tent field towards the stream. On the right of the trail you will see a big green and blue tarp stretched out over a couple of tents. Directly behind that is my camo hammock tarp, and Kathleen's bright yellow Eureka tent.

Will is running late on Metro so I am still waiting for him at Vienna station. Will be there by 12:30 according to Will

    Still coming. See you 1215.

Jim, the invitation says 12:25PM to 3:15PM I think I can make it to CentreVille at 2PM but I will need a carpool? I am open to suggestions.

Not so much a hike as a big party!

      2 · May 15

    • Amy

Definitely a party. You don't have to hike at all, if it suits your fancy! Just lounge around the camping area and meet some verrrry interesting people. No judging allowed at trail days. A once-in-a-lifetime adventure! And we love to have someone lurk around camp to keep an eye on the fire. . Please consider changing your mind...

    Jim,
Will send a private message, but work came up. Tom was traveling with me, so he has to drop too. This is rare that a work emergency comes up (I'm self employed) and it stinks because I've been trying to go there for the past couple of years. I'll be in touch regarding your trail maintenance projects. Thanks for getting back to me in the past.

A job is a good thing Bill, but know we will catch up later this summer, so thanks for letting me know and see you soon.

      May 15

  • Thomas W.

I apologize that I have to drop from the trip. I'd love to go, but as from my brothers message, work came up. I hope to make it next year though, have a great time everyone!

On our way! Kathleen and I are staying in Abingdon tonight, will stake out the campsite tomorrow morning before our hike. We will try to get something near the water!

Thanks Amy, I love listening to the creek when I sleep at night, but look out for the poison ivy!

My attendance is looking a little iffy right now due to family issues. But I still hope to go. Jim, are you going by Centreville or taking a route down from the Baltimore area? Is there still room for me? Is there rain forecast for the weekend?

    May 14

    • Jim N.

I posted the weather down below, but to repeat it, there is a 20% chance of rain for the weekend with highs of 64 and lows or 41: http://forecast.weath...

      May 15

    • Jim N.

I still have you penciled in for riding with me Alison along with Tamara and Will, so let me know if you can make it (C=[masked]).

    1 · April 22

    • Will

So is everyone still meeting at Centerville park n ride at 1215 on Fri? Can we leave our cars there all weekend if we combine cars? Jim, I'd still like to ride with you if possible.

      May 13

    • Jim N.

Sure Will, see you at Centreville.

      May 15

      May 15

  • Justin

Anybody still going down Thursday to hike Friday?

    May 13

    • Amy

We will be at Centreville around 1115. I have a 2+ hour drive there, and can't leave here before 9...

      May 13

    • Justin

      Email sent.

      May 14

  • Amy

So far it looks like dad and I are the only ones on Team Early. I may just stay at the hotel with him Thursday, especially since I will be the only one there and in the rain :/. We will hike Friday morning after I set up camp in the jungle :) I think we will repeat last years iron Mountain Hike, but open to suggestions http://www.midatlantichikes.com/beartreegap.htm

    May 14

  • Jim N.

I will be driving down Thursday evening right now with an empty car.

    May 8

    • Jim N.

Ok, shoot me an email or call (C=[masked]

      May 8

    • Jim N.

Alison with all the rain on Thursday evening/night, it looks like driving down Friday may be the better call. Is that ok with you?

      May 13

  • Emma

Sorry, I have to bail out. :( I can't take Friday off and it's too long of a drive... Have fun!

    May 13

    • Jim N.

You only need to take half a day Emma, not a full day, besides you can have a party on the way down in the Passats big back seat!

      May 13

  • Hollis

It's looking unlikely that I will be able to make it. Will likely be a last minute decision.

    May 13

    • Jim N.

Come anyway Hollis, I like to play in the rain! ;-)

      May 13

    • Jim N.

If you look at one of the pictures above, you can see I know how to set up camp for rain, but hey, it's supposed to be a nice weekend!

      May 13

  • Jim N.

Highs of 66 and lows around 45, partly sunny with a 20% chance of rain, so refreshingly cool this year!

The first annual Hiker Prom will be held Saturday night at the Damascus Brewery:
    http://www.thedamascusbrewery.com/
    from 9 PM to Midnight.
So besides the traditional "drum circle" dancing and jumping, we have another party to attend Saturday night!

  • Alison

Can probably go Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. Would like to carpool. Live in Herndon so Vienna metro or a Walmart lot I guess. Are we taking bikes?

    May 6

    • Natalie

I'd like to leave Friday morning and can give a ride or take a ride. If I give a ride, I have room for 2 additional people in my car.

      May 6

  • Amy

Two weeks and counting!! Who is ready to dance in the mud around the drum circle again? I've been practicing :) Anyhoo, my daughter has a presentation at school Thursday morning. I should be at Centreville around 11 to meet the early birds...

Question for the organizers. Hello, I'm from the Cleveland area and plan on going to trail days with my youngest brother, who is also apart of this group. We're thinking about joining. Is there a meeting area when everyone gets there picked? We actually will be leaving on Thursday. Thanks in advance!

    April 23

    • Jim N.

William send me an email communication/coordination is key since Trail Days is a zoo. If you need a ride, sign up and post it here.
