Seneca Creek Backcountry Trail Maintenance

This trip is for trail maintenance in Seneca Creek Backcountry (which we visit on a great backpacking trip every Winter and Spring) which has cool weather for summer with a nice campsite for all of us to stay in.  There is great fishing in Spruce Knob Lake, Seneca and Gandy Creeks and that gorgeous high mountain backcountry to enjoy!  I will also lead a trip through Sinks of Gandy Cave on Sunday, which is an adventure in itself! If you are going through the cave, bring swimming trunks (or shorts along with a tee shirt you can get muddy), towel , soap, and a strong flashlight.  This is a trip I have done for years for friends and family and the last few years for the group and has always been a summer favorite.  As always we will have a feast on Saturday for dinner (lots of great Dutch oven cooking, details to follow), so about $20 a head will buy you 2 breakfasts, superb dinner, and campsite for the weekend, with great times lingering far into the evening.  Our camp has a superb location on the back side of Spruce Knob close to Spruce Knob Lake, so cool evenings are guaranteed.  If you have not been to Seneca Creek Backcountry let me tell you it has some of the wildest, highest and most beautiful country in the Eastern U.S.!

So let's clear out those deadfalls we saw on our backpacking trips in January and April, put up some blue diamond blazes and do some brushing and give back to another beautiful area where the Potomac River reaches it's highest headwaters, in the clear cool mountain air high up on the back side of Spruce Knob in West Virginia for another great cool summer weekend you will not forget!

UPDATE:

I have secured Shot Cherry Cabin for this event, so we will be staying there.   Shot Cherry Cabin is just a couple miles from the campground posted below.  This is my favorite cabin in Monongahela National Forest and the most romantic as everything runs off propane from the lights to the stove and refrigerator!  I will send out an email detailing directions, so get ready for another grand adventure in the High Country!

Campsite:

Our Campground is ideally located just two miles from Spruce Knob Lake in the Monongahela Forest, creating an ideal base camp for hikes and wildlife watching.

Campground Directions

From Riverton, WV, take US Route 33 south 2 miles to Briery Gap Road,County Route 33/4. Turn right and go 3 miles to Forest Road 112. Continue 13.5 miles to Forest Road 131. Turn right and open gate. Campground is at the end of Forest Road 131.

Thanks everyone for all your hard work as you made a huge difference to this gorgeous area!!! The leaders (Joey, Tom, Scott, Brian, Natalie, and Lori) did such a great job getting everyone in and out and helping out at the cabin, thanks! Hope everyone got at least an equal amount of fun out of this trip as well and look forward to seeing this great group on the next trip!

Btw, hope everyone understands how much cooler it is up there in the summer. It's always like sticking my head in an oven once I come down off the mountain in summer, so always appreciate spending the weekend up in the High Country!

Great event Jim! Thanks to everyone who helped out with my super troopers! They had the time of their lives. Even more than the Disney Cruise!

I'm at the park and ride in the corner next to the intersection. Grey car with failed inspection sticker. White-collar shirt. Shaved head. Nerdy with glasses. Barefoot.

For the 7:30 group, I have a black SUV and we usually meet in the NW corner of the lot. My cell is[masked]-7170. If you're running late, please call. 66 West can have heavy traffic.

I will have to leave Baltimore around noon on Friday to pick up the cabin keys. Will be around the DC area about 12:30 if anyone wants to ride with me. Tom and Joey could you guys handle the carpools at Centreville, please? If you ride with me I will stop at Dolly Sods on the way to Seneca Creek, and oh expect to enjoy a fab sunset from Spruce Knob Friday evening as that's how I roll!

Thanks Tom, but we are covering 8 trail heads and not just one. That is my annual Spring trip you posted and not just what we are doing this trip.

Weather is still holding for Saturday during the day, partly sunny and 78, however there is a 50% chance of rain Saturday night and Sunday:

I'm further west than centerville (rt 66 exit 31 for The Plains). There's an unofficial ride share lot right off of the exit on the side of the road. Could I leave my car there and jump in with one of you guys on your way by?

    July 11

    • Bethany

Mark - Jim emailed me and will call me later, but the short of it is: -we can leave early, but we wont be able to go to the cabin until Jim arrives, so we'll just have to hike or something to entertain ourselves

-we should plan some food of our own. Communal meals will be known closer to Friday as cooking plans are whether dependent. We should bring $20 cash for the communal meal in case it happens...

-this is a car-camping style trip with day hikes from the cabin to do trail maintenance, not a backpacking trip.

I really wanted to do this, miss hanging with you guys, but forgot about a family obligation this weekend. But I will be back soon !

I am traveling from the Charlottesville area. I need to join a carpool when I arrive at the Centerville lot. I can arrive at 7:30 or in the afternoon.

    July 22

    • Steven C.

I do not want to drive on unpaved roads. I would rather carpool from Centerville.

      July 22

    • Jim N.

No worries Steven, just giving you the option.

Weather for Friday and Saturday looks great, sunny and high of 75 and low of 59! Will send out an email about group dinner. There is a fireplace we can cook over and will send out an email by Wednesday, but think we will end up with the best cabin around which sleeps 20, so the rest of us will have to sleep in tents out by the spring fed ponds!

I will be leaving from DC around 5 and have room for 2 to 3. Just email me if you need a ride.

Hi all - is anyone driving out from DC who could offer up a ride? I'm car-less in the city and can get myself to any metro stop in DC/Virginia. Will chip in for carpool expenses. Thanks!

    July 10

    • Jim N.

I can pick you up from Vienna Metro North on my way to Centreville if you need it Kelly.

    Folks-

I have a mini van, can take 3 additional peeps quite comfortably and room for lots of gear. I live in Alexandria near Kingstowne and folks can meet at my house (ample free parking in my community), OR I can scoop you up on way out of town. I don't have a travel agenda set yet, though I would like to get out of dodge before traffic is Friday nightmare status. I believe its a 4 hour-ish drive. If interested- please email me. I'm very flexible

This is my first backpacking experience with the group, I'm quite excvited and I'm quite gear challenged too- Jim? may need to consult with you on this. I no longer have my tent and pack.... My story for now is a 'bear' ate them. :)

    Thanx!

No worries Jody, I can get you geared up in whatever era you want, lol! Just give me a call on my cell listed at the top of the page.

We are replacing the trail signs in Seneca Creek this year everyone, so a special event! We did this 4 or 5 years ago in Dolly Sods, so I will show you a good time!
