Black Forest, PA (42 mi, 8500 feet elevation gain)

AND RESCHEDULING AGAIN!!!! Since a lot have bailed out for various reasons Joffrey and I have decided to each spend the weekend with different kinds of birds ;)

NEW DATE: June 21st

Everything will stay as it is.

-------------------------------------------------------

The Black Forest Trail is a strenuous adventure of 42 miles and around 8500 feet elevation gain. Though we need to climb several steep ascents the breathtaking views are well worth the effort.

As this is going to be a short weekend the difficulty will increase compared to my original plan. I am thinking of a 24-18 mile split, hiking the BFT CW with 2/3 of the elevation gain on Saturday. But after all the training hikes and the Presi fresh in mind this should not be a problem! Or is it?!

We will leave Friday afternoon from Shady Grove Metro station. We will stay at the Slate Run campsites on Friday night.

Maps and more information can be found here:

www.midatlantichikes.com/bfts.htm

Please familiarize yourselves with the maps and print them. Hiking pace will be brisk to cover the distances mentioned above. Early rise and shine as usual. As we will have two full days of hiking I want to break camp at 7 am. This is not a hiking weekend you want to attempt with a traditional backpacking load. Anything beyond 30 lbs will be brutal unless you hike 25 miles including 5,000 feet gain regularly with that weight.
Everyone is responsible for their own meals, please make sure you have enough food. More importantly, be sure to carry plenty of water. That being said, if you have a water purification system (filter, chemicals, steripen) you won't need to carry that much as the area will provide us with plenty of streams.  Bring your favorite trail spirit to share at the fire.

If you don't answer the questions while signing up you will be instantly removed. That is the only way I can judge if you have the necessary level of experience to participate in case I have not hiked with you before.

In case you need a ride or can offer one, let us know. I for one would need a ride from our meeting point.

Please let me know if there are any questions.

I wrote up a little trip report: https://docs.google.com/document...

      Nice write-up. I changed the overall gain from 6000 to 9,000 :)

      June 27, 2013

    • Joffrey P.

Was it that much? Eh. Ok!

Great trail. Temps in the low 80s are definitely my limit for that kind of endeavor. Plenty of streams to cool off and replenish the water bottles. No ticks and the gnats were not too annoying (though a bug net helped in places). Trail is blazed well; one can't really get lost. We were philosophizing about the versatility of deodorant and lipstick on the trail; came up with a good (though R-rated) trail name for Honey; Joffrey should have brought blueberry pie ingredients and I saw a few nice birds. All in all a great weekend with great people.

Nice trail and a good walk. Thanks for finally getting this to happen, Holger, and thanks to all for the company on the trail.

  • Sophie

What a wonderful weekend, it was lots of fun, and my longest backpacking trip yet. Thanks everybody for the company and fun moments.

I may be late. It depends on traffic from Centerville. My number has changed to (571)[masked] if you need to reach me.

Hey guys, the weekend is here and I am excited about the trip. So where exactly are we meeting at Shady Grove? is there North or South side or something like that? It is my first time there.

    June 21, 2013

    • Joffrey P.

Meet me in the Park & Ride just beyond the buses on the East side of the metro station (to your right compared to the trail travel direction).

If it's just us four, I can probably take us all!

  • Ki-ran

Hi, I want to take part in this backpacking. It seems exciting, and I would like to have a fun time during living in US. But I have never been doing this before.. can I join you?

    June 19, 2013

    • Joffrey P.

If you have never been backpacking before, this is likely not a good trip for you. Look for a lower mileage trip, or even attend a Backpacking 101 trip to learn about backpacking. This is a strenuous trip for people who have their gear and abilities pretty well tuned.

Sorry, change of plans. Next time though!

    June 18, 2013

  • Shelley

I hope you all have a great time. I really wish I could make this, but I'll be out of the country.

    2 · June 11, 2013

  • Vince

Is it possible change to 6pm @ Shady Grove? Also need a ride to the BFT.

    June 10, 2013

    • Vince

Yeah I'm in Urbana. North of Gaithersburg, before Frederick on 270.

      June 10, 2013

    • Joffrey P.

      OK. That should be doable.

      June 11, 2013

  • Honey B.

With Sophie matching my pace I looking forward to this hike! I should probably do a little training exercise ahead of time huh?

    1 · June 7, 2013

  • Brian

Damn it, I feel like I started the trend of backing out and now feel guilty about it. So are you two sticking with it this weekend? You going to just do it as a day hike now? /Beast Mode

    May 31, 2013

    • Joffrey P.

Hah, I think we will also bail and reschedule. I'll get in a heavy-pack training hike in the heat this way, and maybe even manage to sleep a little.

      May 31, 2013

    • Holger

Nah, anything beyond 30 miles per day I would not consider enjoyable especially in that kind of weather. So no extreme day hike. I am getting fat anyways. No need to feel guilty about anything. I would have even done it on my own, but can better use the weekend for other stuff.

      May 31, 2013

  • Peter J.

I'm sorry to be among those who bailed out, I would REALLY like to do this hike. Maybe later this month?

    May 31, 2013

    • Joffrey P.

I think we'll reschedule - how does the weekend of June 22 sound?

      May 31, 2013

  • Shelley

Sorry, friends. Just realizing it's not humanely possible to put out all of the forest fires that need to be put out by 4 tomorrow. It's going to be a long wknd of work. Sad. Especially since my GGCrown arrived today. It's light AS A FEATHER. Sigh.

    May 30, 2013

  • Jen

The hike sounds great but I don't know that I'll be able to keep up with everyone so I'm going to pass and wait for a slightly less "brisk" pace, hehe. I hope you all have fun! :)

    May 28, 2013

    • Honey B.

You can hike with me! I already know from experience that I can't keep up with Holger, Joffrey, and Shelly. The trail looks simple enough to follow, just stick with the orange blazes. I'm already preparing to roll into camp an hour behind these guys.

      May 30, 2013

    • Jen

Aw, thank you! I would but I already joined in (and agreed to carpool) on another hike a couple of friends are doing.

      May 31, 2013

  • Peter J.

I'm crossing my fingers that I can get off work this Saturday!

    2 · May 29, 2013

Sadly, it now looks like I'm going to have to work :-(

      May 30, 2013

    • Joffrey P.

      Dislike.

      May 30, 2013

  • Michael M.

You guys have a great time! The Black Forest Trail is a ton of fun!

    May 30, 2013

  • Brian

Okay, I hate to do it but I'm going to have to back out of this one. I've been working down the list of things I need to get done before heading to Sweden and I start veering into panic mode with everything that needs to get done yet. I feel like I need this weekend to get my shit together. It's just 2 weeks away!

Besides I hiked this thing just a few weekends ago, and this time it would be hot! ;)

    May 29, 2013

    • Joffrey P.

Good luck getting everything together! Stay inside and enjoy the ac.

      May 29, 2013

  • Brian

Dang, it's looking like it's actually going to be hot for the weekend. I bet that means the bugs will be out in full force, too. I've been loving that it's stayed so cool through May. I'm one of those needing a ride from Shady Grove. If there's one heading out from the Silver Spring area I wouldn't mind hopping in on that either.

    May 28, 2013

    • Michael M.

LOL ... For some time now, I have been contemplating taunting Joffrey the way he would taunt me if I said "it's too cold!" :) ... Beast Mode, remember the weekend of the derecho ... You can do it!

      May 29, 2013

    • Joffrey P.

Haha. OK. OK. I'll shut up. For what it's worth, I'm already packing my bag anticipating low sleep craziness just before the trip as always.

      May 29, 2013

  • Holger

After the hike on Sunday we'll stop by here:

    May 1, 2013

    • Rick L.

Im a bit out of shape for 42 miles in a weekend, but the brewery makes me want to shuttle everybody. That looks like a great ending.

      May 29, 2013

  • Peter

42 mil? I can only do 10 mi per day backpacking.

    May 26, 2013

    • Joffrey P.

Get lighter gear, get in shape. :-)

      May 26, 2013

    • Joffrey P.

And of course, I'm happy to assist with tips by e-mail, if you're interested!

      May 28, 2013

  • Ginger Q.

I will have to back out of this backpacking trip. My legs and body need a break from all the hiking/running over the last couple of weeks. Have fun everyone!

    May 27, 2013

  • David S.

Just coming off two days on AT. Recent knee injury flared up. Will not be prudent for me to do BFT next weekend. So sorry to miss this.

    May 27, 2013

  • patricia z.

Can not do this! What was I thinking? I have another event on Sunday. Have fun!

    May 16, 2013

  • Aaron

Damn, good call! Too bad I got a trail 1/2 to run that weekend. Enjoy!

    May 4, 2013

  • Joffrey P.

I can drive. I also have space in my very spacious 2-person floorless shelter, if you'd like to save weight by not having to take a shelter.

This looks awesome, but I'll probably be recovering from hiking Mt Rogers/Grayson Highlands the weekend before!

    February 18, 2013

  • Holger

Date has been updated and difficulty increased to fit the current fitness level of the group :)

    February 13, 2013

    • Holger

Probably CCW. I am actually thinking of joining your trip in April ;)

      February 14, 2013

    • Michael M.

Why not? I suppose I really should do the loop CCW myself, since I've done it CW, but I like my way of doing it, and I don't want to echo Dillon's write up. My dates are 4/19-4/21. You'll probably have to take a half day off on 4/19, as I want us to get to the restaurant for dinner, and it's a 4.5 hour drive.

      February 14, 2013

  • Leah

Arg! Jiu jitsu world championships 29 May - 2 June, so I can't make it!

    February 14, 2013

  • Brandon S.

I just got back from here. This trail is pretty rough. There is hardly any maintenance done to it, but it is fairly well blazed. Firewood is very difficult to come by in some of the campsites. Also, be aware that there is a pretty big stream crossing about 10 minutes into the trail. Other than that it is an amazing hike, let me know when you plan on going up there.

    January 21, 2013

  • Brian

Holger - Let me know whenever you plan to do this.

I would love to do this trip, and the weekend of April 6th works for me. Please let me know when a date is finally decided.

    October 30, 2012

  • patricia z.

Looks like a great trip at a nice time of year. I'm very interested too.

    October 26, 2012

  • Holger

Nobody was interested to do it this weekend so I postponed it to a later date. The date above is not set in stone. Could be a good winter trip.

    October 4, 2012

    • Joffrey P.

That could also be fun. I'm free after the first weekend of Nov. at this point :)

If that is the case I'm totally in this time.

    October 4, 2012

A little too far out to plan, but this seems like it would be a good thing to do.
