Car Camping at Prince William Forest

  • Nov 17, 2012 · 10:00 AM

UPDATE 11/4. Here are some details about the car camping trip.

1.) There is a 5.00 fee per car to enter the park. Go to the visitor center to pay and receive a copy of the park map. EVERYONE is responsible for getting a map. I will provide you with the Saturday's hiking map. See below.

2.) Meet at 10:00am at the Oak Ridge Campground on Saturday, November 17th. Each site is $20.00 and you can have two tents per site. (max of 6 people) I plan to arrive on Friday 11/16 around 5:30pm ish and stay in the B-section of the campground. I will not be hard to find. I drive a blue mini-van with PATC sticker on the back. Arrive at the campground to check out the sites and to meet others who may be willing to share a campsite and the cost. You can also choose to camp solo on a site as well. You will need to go back to the visitor center to get a camping permit. Bringing cash for the campsite will help. I will NOT be handling any money. Other information:

*Although this is a car camping trip, you actually sleep in a tent. Sleeping the car in the winter can be dangerous...ie freezing and running the car engine while you sleeping can kill you.

* Please do not plan to sleep in a Cartoon Character sleeping bag, these bags are not intended for winter use. The degree of bag you choose will depend on the weather.

* Please read and be aware the Park Supervisor's memo about the rules of the park. You are responsible to obey all the rules and regulations. http://www.nps.gov/prwi/parkmgmt/upload/PRWI-Compendium-12.pdf

3.) Food. There will be nothing provided for you. You are responsible for bringing your own food, stoves and cookware. I am however encouraging people to bring food to share around the campfire on Saturday night. On past trips people have brought "finger foods". If you plan to eat, please plan to bring something for the group. It is only fair.

4.) DRESS. This is winter camping and you must have winter clothing. Hat, gloves, jacket and boots are must. Please use common sense.

5.) After discussing the hike with Kirsten, we decided to offer a 7 mile hike on Saturday . The hike will start at 11:15 AM sharp. We will carpool to the trailhead from the campsite. It is also easy to add more miles if the group chooses to do so. To make things easier we will be hiking the trail described on the hikingupward site. Please see this link: http://www.hikingupward.com/OVH/PrinceWilliam/ . If you feel like you are not in shape for 7 miles don't worry, this is a large group so there will be people going slowly, Kirsten or I will sweep so we will not leave anyone behind. This is considered on the easy side for a hike.

6.) We are going to remain flexible on Sunday's hike. Some people will want to go home, some will want to stay. We have time to discuss this on Saturday night. I would like to get home at a decent time on Sunday.

7.) Please check the meetup site regularly for updates. RAIN will cancel the trip...snow may not :) My cell number is[masked]-0216.

8.) Please make yourself aware of the Washington DC Liability Wavier posted on this meetupsite. You are responsible for you own safety. I would like to have a list of people who are attending and an emergency contact number. I will ask you to sign in. This is for the safety of all. I WILL destroy the names and numbers at the end of the hike and I will NOT be calling you.

If you have any questions please let me know. Thanks for your cooperation ahead of time. If your plans change please remove yourself from the list there are many people on the waiting list.

Thanks,

Kelly

Sweet we are in!! We also will be coming Friday night probably get there by 7pm. If anyone needs anything let us know.. We do have a extra tent and a Canopy that will cover a picnic table. Also have a stove. looking forward to meeting everyone/\

  • Kelly

Our Friday night crew, we will have a campfire in loop B .

    November 12, 2012

  • Kelly

Few odds and ends...called the park, they suggest us having a campfire at the ampitheather in Loop A. I believe the bathroom for Loop A is closed for service....below is a link of the map. The park said with such a large group the ampitheater would be a good place to gather...I am find with that..flexible. I will be at a B location to camp. The ampitheather is big enough to accommodate our group. while far enough away that we would not distrurb other campers. (Quiet hours start at 9:00pm...but ...) We will have to carry in our food a bit...but so what? Also a friendly reminder that although alcohol is permitted but please control the amount that you drink! Our group is known for outstanding members and great times...not drunken fools :) Also please remember this is a Federal Park..not a wildnerness area so there are more rules but we don't have to worry about hunters.

I'm considering driving Friday night (vs sat AM) & I'd like to share a campsite. But this is my 1st trip w this group. Rides:It's me & my dog in a Subaru. So I could pbby give 1-2 people a ride if they're flexible @ departure timing & love dogs. I'd come from NE near the stadium. Food: I'm vegan, so if other vegan/vegetarians want to make a joint meal sat, just speak up & then we could chat offlist?. I have a small msr stove, pots etc. i can also bring oranges and oreos for general consumption. :) cynthia

Hi Thia. I'm driving up on Friday and willing to share a campsite. Also have room in my tent for another female if anyone wants to share. I'll probably get to the park sometime between 3-5pm. I'm in a silver Subaru Forester with MD plates and a cluster of cows on the dashboard. I'm going to bring apple cider.

      November 12, 2012

Hello, I am going to send and email about this trip to see if people are stil planning to attending. I need to keep the numbers at 30 since I couldn't reserve the group site.

      November 12, 2012

Not sure what snack I'll bring, but I was thinking of bringing some spiced apple cider. Sounds like someone is bringing a portable stove, so I'll bring some extra fuel, a pot, and ladle :)

Andrew and I will be making campfire cobbler in our dutch oven to share on Saturday night.

Suggestions great, thanks Tom! Please list what food you will bringing to share at the camp fire on Saturday night or if you wish Sunday morning. I am not sure what I am bringing, I am working on the organization. I will post the weather report closer to the date...bye for now!

    November 11, 2012

    • Tom

Excellent! I know that I have a stove and other people are bringing individual and group stoves ... anyone bringing a small grill? If not, we'll have a better idea what not to bring.

      November 11, 2012

  • Tom

Maybe it would be helpful for people to list the food they are planning to share. Avoid 30 packs of hot dogs and marshmallows :)

I have an extra 'group tent' (stand up height; no 'hunching over') that sleeps 6 and has an extention 'Florida room' for small group dining in inclement weather. Since I'm in Springfield, I can take one rider from Franconia/Springfield Metro Stn., or could carpool with Tom.

    Missy (that's you Ms. Kelly!)..
How many layer of blankets should I bring to keep myself toasty while sleeping in an old Walmart sleeping bag from my boys during their tenure at the Boy Scouts.....maybe a bottle of two of red wine will do a better job and if alcohol is not allowed will settle for some good old dark hot chocolate in front of the bonfire...

    October 18, 2012

    • Kelly

Giulina a have a cold weather bag for you to use and a sleeping pad. ...you can bring a blanket to put on top of bag i you want.

Miss you to Giuliana! Just been working on the house and cars to get them ready for winter. I have 3 cars, a truck and a big home on a lot of ground to take care of and still need to sort through all my Mom and Dad's stuff in my home as they both passed last year, so way too much to do. Holger suggested I post a work party at my home so I can get back on the trails!

    October 16, 2012

  • KingsleyC

Hi Kelly, do you have a waitlist for this event?

    October 15, 2012

  • Kelly

Hello everyone. I just wanted to give everyone something to think about....in case it is not obvious...this is a cold weather camping trip. You must have cold weather gear....hiking boots...hat...gloves..rain gear.....winter jacket...cold weather sleeping bag and tent. CHANGE OF CLOTHES a must. Remaining dry is important..when you start shivering it can be too late... You can get in trouble very easily if you are not prepared. These campsite are drive up sites so you can bring everything you need in your car. Everyone is responsible for their own safety. If you are cold don't be afraid to tell someone. As far as the hiking for Sat. I will have two hikes one between 5-6 miles and another long one...10+ or so. I am meeting with Kirsten the first weekend in Nov. so we will look at the maps together. Sunday's hike...it will depend what people want to do. Hiking is easy in this park..elevation gain about 200 feet at the most. I am also open to suggestions. I will keep you posted.

    October 15, 2012

  • Kirsten

Kelly, I would like to attend. I have a two burner Coleman camp stove and a small table to place it on. Also I have a 10 X 12 ft tarp to hang over an area if the weather dictates so. I will bring a bow saw to cut firewood. Thanks.

    October 12, 2012

  • Tom

I have an extra tent for 2-3 people. I'll bring it along. I can give anyone a ride, but I'm in Springfield.

    October 9, 2012

    • Kelly

thanks for the offer and help

      October 10, 2012

  • Kelly

Hello, everyone...I will look at the Park Map sites for hiking trails this weekend. I hiked some of these trails before and there are many options. We have many people coming so I think maybe we should have two groups hiking. One fast paced group and another moderate group. This would be considered very easy hiking, more like walking. This would be considered a cold weather trip. Winter gear will be needed. I will give a general list on what to bring. Since these are drive up sites you don't have to worry about weight.
