Second try - Mudhole Gap Newbies loop - 2 day Backpacking trip.

Easy/moderate backpacking trip suitable for every level of expertize.

This is an backpacking trip design for NEW MEMBERS ONLY and is NOT a cabin/car camping trip, we will be carrying all what we need whit us from star to end of trip.

Be aware of season, snow maybe present.

PS: The first 4 miles will totally kick your behind so be ready, the rest will go easy as a breeze.

At 13 miles the Mudhole Gap loop isn't as difficult as a lot of shorter hikes. After we compete the first 3.8 miles to the ridge line near Meneka Peak the remaining 3/4 of the hike is either downhill or mostly flat, with the exception of a gradual ascent on the back loop. Little Passage Creek that runs through Mudhole gap is beautiful in the spring when the water is running with snow melt. One thing to keep in mind is the area is very popular with mountain bikers, so make sure to keep an ear out for them as they come up from behind.

GEAR LIST
What you need to bring:
1.) Tent
2.) Sleeping bag
3.) Sleeping pad
4.) Rain suit - NOT poncho.
5.) Water shoes or sandals for stream crossing, NOT flipflop
6.) 2-3 extra pair of socks.
7.) Backpacking stove + pot/cup/dish/spoon
8.) Dehydrate food for your self.
9.) Camel bag/bottle or similar for drinking water.
10.) Snacks/sandwich/nutribar, etc.
11.) Water - Only you know how much you need for a one day of hard work, Sunday we will re-feel from a stream.
12.) A good attitude and a big smile on your face.

I do recommend to bring an extra set of clothes/shoes and leave on the car so we have something clean to change when going back home.

I will bring a water filter, if someone else have another one please bring it as well.

If you don't have some of this gear items, post it on the comments section bellow and maybe I can loan some of them, limited supplies.
What I can bring to be share:
4 - 2 person tents
4 - Sleeping bags

4 - Backpacks
NOTE: I won't bring any of this unless you ask for it.

Bring whatever you think you "may need" BUT I'll ask you to show me the content of your backpack and don't be surprise when I star removing items from there, this way I will help you just to pack necessary essential items.

I was thinking of a pork tenderloin over the fire with mashed potatoes and a vegetable such as green beans or corn for dinner and can accomodate about 6. Normally those in my car like to participate and Neal, so that leaves 1 more who can get in on it. Just need to plan it out.

    November 21, 2012

    • Neal

Great! We can split the cost of the food among the 3 of us? you just bringing food for 3 people or do others normally join last minute? Trying to figure out how much cash I should bring (will budget 15-20 for gas as well).

      November 23, 2012

    • Jim N.

Neal I have to plan food in advance, so no last minute additions. So plan on Sarah, you, & I splitting the cost.

@ ALL - In afternoon and the night we are going to be cover from the wind because we will camp down in the valley but still it will be cold, there are 3 ring fires in our camping spot to keep us warm, once again and in special now SHARE TENT is the way to go.

    November 23, 2012

    The weather report is here:
    http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=38.96154447940714&lon=-78.33114624023437
Due to the wind, cold and northwest exposure, this is no longer a newbie trip, but a winter trip (High of 36 with a 15 to 34 MPH wind with a low of 25). You will need multiple layers (probably need long johns as well) with good wind protection. If you do not have a "0" degree sleeping bag, this trip is not for you. A 4 season tent is preferable for wind protection. I have 2 x 4 season tents that can sleep 5 total. I know Sarah and Ana are using one. I will use the other so can sleep up to 2 more. If your feet or hands get cold easily be prepared with good socks, gloves, and hats that cover and protect your ears and hand/foot warmers if needed. Be prepared for frozen water bladders and bottles as well. A campfire will be needed to keep people warm so be ready to help. Darwin and I will need to go over your gear to be sure you are prepared.

@ ALL - Time to "update" your status, if you can't make it for any reason please take 1 minute of your time and update your assistance status that way we don't have to wait on Vienna metro/trial-head for someone that will never show up.

    November 18, 2012

    • Matt

Yes. We will meet at METRO. Looks like meals are getting planned too. Should the four of us coordinate something? I can contribute whatever is needed food wise, but don't have a stove. Could pick up propane if one of you (Russell/Sara) have a stove?

      November 21, 2012

    • Russell C.

I am just giving Sara a ride from DC to Vienna when she plans to switch cars I believe and I also think she is covered for food with another group. I am a fish eating vegetarian so I assumed I'd be on my own for food but you can let me know otherwise.

    November 18, 2012

      November 18, 2012

    • Ja - O

Jim, Thank you very much. Actually, I really want to join but I cannot because I have to go pick up my friend at union station at 3.30 pm on Sunday. Hope next trip I can go with you.

Yes, I did Darwin! Looks like you all had a good time. And where is all the rain and wind pre-Sandy you were supposed to get before you were finished? : ) It looks drier and calmer than any of the last few backpacking trips I've been on!
