Old Rag Night Hike - An old favorite with a twist

Let's take advantage of the high lunar illumination (full moon) on 26 January and experience an old favorite with a twist. The views during the day are spectacular enough, but at night they are a completely new experience.

We will meet in Centerville at 7 pm and hit the trailhead around 9 pm. We should reach the peak of old rag by about midnight and be back down the mountain and on our way home at about 2-3 AM. You may need to drive home at 4 or 5 AM, so it may be a good idea to take a nap before the hike so you can safely make it home.

It could be very cold, especially when we reach the summit and aren't moving, but once it gets closer we can gauge the proper gear accordingly, but please only sign up for the hike if you have gear that will enable you to be comfortable in low temperatures. Headlamps with extra batteries will absolutely be required. You may need to bring some micro spikes depending on how much ice is up there.

There's just something special about a night hike. =] Many thanks, Brandon, for leading the hike and to the entire group for your good spirits! I look forward to getting to know everyone more on hikes/trips to come.

What an awesome trip! Not only did I get to try out using Microspikes for the first time but the sky and snow was so bright we didn't even need to wear a headlamp. Thanks a lot Brandon for putting this together.

It was a great physical and mental challenge due to the night vision, snow/icy, Bio clock twisting... Congrats to everyone finishing this hike safe and sound with a lot of laughter . Thanks to Brandon organizing this hike.

For those of you who are signed up as going, please ensure you have microspykes or stabilizers and good cold gear. Due to the recent snow, the trail may be pretty difficult in places and it may get extremely cold. Prepare for about 10-15 degrees on the summit, probably much colder with wind chill.

Who all is planning on driving and who all needs rides?

I would like to meet at the Centreville park and ride to carpool with someone (and am happy to contribute gas $). Does anyone still have room in their car? I'm looking forward to what sounds like a wonderful hike!

Evaluating things at home/work, I'm only going to do the night hike this time. Molly, I'll be at the Centerville P&R for 7 pm, and can give you a ride - please send me a message with your number and I'll send you mine in case of emergency/delay. If anyone else needs a ride from there, please do the same; I can fit two more happy hikers after Molly. Please let me know by 5 pm; I'll post again if/once my car is full. Thanks!

Hi. So the 3am sunrise versioned is cancelled or just not showing on the site anymore? Do you need someone to host it?

Originally we had about 8-9 on the waitlist for this one, so I opted to try to do two hikes, but so many people dropped out I think we will just end up doing one big hike.

Hi Brandon. I put up the sunrise hike separately, in case anyone else only wanted to do this portion of the hike. Probably will see you and the others at the trailhead!

If some of you are still interested in doing a sunrise hike we can go up to Mary's Rock after we get down from Old Rag. It will be pretty chilly waiting for the sunrise at Mary's rock, but I think it will be doable. An alternative would be to drive over to Hawksbill. If you guys are interested we can discuss it at the park and ride. Sunrise is at 7:23 AM, and I expect us to get back down from Old Rag by about 2-3 AM, so that will give us plenty of leeway to find somewhere for a sunrise hike.

It will definitely make it more challenging simply because of the time of day combined with the temperature and the fact most of us sleep during the time we plan to hike. This won't be for a hike for the faint of heart.

Hooray!! My heart is having extra beats just by thinking about the Moon shine and Sunrise of the Old Rag Mountain!!

Hey guys, I will see if one of the other organizers is willing to lead another group or the possibility of me hosting another hike for Friday evening. I will let you folks on the waitlist know about that at some point next week. Any day that weekend will be great, since the moon is going to be pretty full that entire weekend: http://www.calendar-12.com/moon_calendar/2013/january
