Training Hike #5- 3 Ridges and The Priest Plus Half Presi Training!

  • February 8, 2013 · 7:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Training Hike #5 is rugged and beautiful (like most of the people in the group ;-)) with camping on Friday and Saturday nights at a local campground with hot showers. We will do a figure 8 loop through the 2 most rugged areas around, 3 Ridges on one side of the Tye River and The Priest on the other and will finish off at another hidden gem so you are amply rewarded for your efforts! Campground location is here:

http://crabtreefallscampground.com/index.html

with more details to follow, including a Half Presi training hike option, but wanted to get this one posted so you can plan for it!

The Full Training hike will be about 24 miles and 8500' elevation gain.

For the Half Presi Training Hike (approx. 14 miles and 4500' elevation gain), we will start up the AT from Hwy 56 (Crabtree Falls Hwy) to The Priest Mtn over to Spy Rock (if time allows), backtrack to Forest Road 263, and then down Crabtree Falls trail to our campsite. (This will involve some car shuttles.) Bring traction clips for your boots in case of snowy/icy trails.

Thanks to all the great Organizers who helped with this one from Kirsten leading the Half Group, to Dave suggesting doing 3 Ridges counter-clockwise and all those great sweeps we had to "clean up" from Svetlana to Joffrey, Holger, Craig, Neal, and Steve, thanks everyone! Glad everyone liked the routes and "surprises" I threw in on this one, so re-scheduled it for May! Thanks for your commitment and hard work....congrats and look forward to the next one!

Thanks to a great group of hikers on the Half Presi training hike. It was a pleasure leading the group that works together and came prepared for the weather. To Svetlana, thanks you for ensuring no one was left behind. Continue to work on core strengthening and stair climbing. Rock hopping above tree line on Mt. Washington will require all your strength. Look forward to seeing you all on the next training hike. Jim, thanks for designing the trail. The views were awesome.

First time out with the group. Enjoyed it immensely but found out I'm in NOT in top shape! Thank you for all the organizers who made it happen. It was great meeting new faces and I'm looking forward to the next hike.

Great to hang with all yas, we had a great time doing a caz hike up the falls and our usual lingering campfire brekkie Sunday, feeling a bit worse today, think cold has spread south so good decision not to do any of the longer hikes, catch yas on the next butt kicker!

Bernard, I really like the photos you posted. Could you perhaps add descriptive text that identifies camera, lense, and exposure settings?

Well, you know... it was alright. No, it was awesome! Much more of a weekend getaway than expected out of a training hike. Parts of the hike completely kicked my ass, for sure. It was good to see what I need to work on to prepare for the Presi. But also, plenty of great views and plenty of memorable moments. Thanks to everyone for such a great time!

Wow, fantastic weekend! The level of detail to plan and organize does not go unnoticed. Thanks for the guidance of our trip leaders Kirsten, Jim, and others, and everyone on our hike that came back smiling! Campsite and hot showers, followed by great service and food added that much more. Well done, see you on the trails again soon!

Jim, you picked a great route for this one. It was plenty tough even without the visit to Spy Rock. This was my first visit to Crabtree Falls and won't be my last. It is definitely a step up from White Oak Canyon and that is saying something. And what a strong group of hikers we had on this one. I was totally impressed with everyone and greatly enjoyed getting to know everyone a little better.

Where has the route map been posted? Does the hike begin at the campground?

    February 5, 2013

    • Jim N.

Rick I will make one up and send it out later this week since I am re-installing all my map software today (I hope). I have all the maps and am familiar with the route as is Kirsten who is leading the Half Training hike. I will also have copies for the leaders. The hike starts about a 5 minute drive from the campground and ends at the campground, so a logistically sweet route.

      February 5, 2013

    • Jim N.

I am very thorough Rick, but do not post all the information....talk to you about it at camp.

    Traction on Sale at EMS:
The Hillsound spikes have some improvements over the Kahtoola. Note the strap across the boot to keep them on. in addition they seem to be a bit heavier construction.

Yaktrax aren't going to be rugged enough in rocky, steep conditions.

    February 3, 2013

Note also longer spikes and at least one additional spike. I used these a few weeks back on Old Rag; they worked very well.

      February 3, 2013

I ordered my pair! Thanks for the link Patricia, though it seems the trail should be clear for us this weekend.

Hey All - anyone leaving on the later side and willing to pick up someone in Vienna ~7pm?

    February 4, 2013

    • Jim N.

Larke, I can pick you up at Vienna if you need it at 7 PM. I do not have to be to Centreville/Dunkin Donuts across the street until 7:30 PM

      February 5, 2013

  • Dave

I spoke with the folks at the campground today and it looks like Jim has everything all set. They are giving us a group rate of $4 per person per night and have firewood for sale on site that is much cheaper than buying it at the convenience store. Firewood from outside the area is not permitted.

    2 · February 4, 2013
