Roaring Plains/Dolly Sods Winter Backpacking Trip

This is one of my favorite Winter trips to enjoy great views, amazing array of colors, wind, fog, rain, and deep snow!  So come prepared for the real deal (High Country Winter Backpacking) as we go for a snowshoe backpacking trip once more, so 'nuff said!

Be prepared to walk in the dark on Friday night, so only fun, upbeat people allowed that are strong backpackers!  If you have not done a trip with me before, please contact me...had to learn this one the hard way as I want it to be great for us both!  Organizers and seasoned vets of the group are always welcome of course!  We will walk up the mountain on Friday night in snowshoes if needed and camp where the wind is strong and wild and do the Canyon Rim, so not for the faint of heart, so people must be vetted for this trip and it will be limited to only 12 people since it is a wilderness area.  If you have Monday off you can stay all 3 days, but I have to head back on Sunday myself.  Please sign up for the waiting list and after vetting will be moved to the "attending" list.

So saddle up for one of the wildest, wooliest places left in the Mid-Atlantic...the top of the Continental Divide in our region...the one and only Roaring Plains!

Had a great time with everyone! Jim's cooking always seems to set the standard but this time Teresa's soup was pretty awesome!

Amazing time snowshoeing in the wild & wonderful Dolly Sods. Camped next to a beautiful waterfall with temps dropping below 0 degrees. Thank you Jim for leading such an awesome group into the woods!! Truly enjoyed this unforgettable weekend!!

Does anyone have extra tent space? I may want to sleep on the ground for this trip, I will be happy to carry some of it.

Does anyone have space in a 4 season tent? Otherwise I can bring a 3 season to share with one other, two depending on how warm we want to be! For any others staying Monday, perhaps we can square away the tent situation before starting out.

    February 12, 2013

    • KingsleyC

if u dont mind, u are welcome to share with me and Jimmy. we hv a 3 p tent. then sunday night u can share with Kelley.

i also have printed dir to west side of DS.

      February 15, 2013

  • Jim N.

Ok, I am considering doing a loop in Dolly Sods since we will not arrive until Friday night about 11:30 PM so we can get the tents set up much earlier and get some sleep. Let's see how much snow they get today and tonight and go ahead and give me your feedback about going to Dolly Sods (across the street/valley) from Roaring Plains.

    February 13, 2013

    • Neal

      Good with DS

      February 14, 2013

    • Jim N.

Vince we do trail maintenance for all of Dolly Sods and Roaring Plains, so will get you up to Roaring Plains later this year. We will be better protected in Dolly Sods and it will give you guys more territory to cover for those staying over to Monday.

  • Jim N.

I will start to think about food for a group dinner Saturday night if the group is interested as well...if anyone has any ideas, post it here or let me know, thanks.

    February 13, 2013

    • Neal

      Same here, space is tight

      February 14, 2013

    • Jim N.

Ok, since no consensus has emerged I will make a suggestion: How about Jambalaya made with sausage, shrimp and either chicken or ham with french bread and red wine? Always a good warming meal for me in the wild.

      February 15, 2013

  • Jim N.

First decent weather report says lows around 4 degrees and highs around 15, so if you don't have at least a -15 degree bag, you should not be on this trip.

    February 11, 2013

    • PaulD

fwiw, my liner helps to keep the inside of my bag from getting rank too quickly in the warmer months.. that's about it. For that reason when I do use a liner, I only use a silk liner.. super light and keeps the stank out.

      February 14, 2013

    • Jim N.

Paul, I thought a dog could not smell his own stink?

      February 15, 2013

  • Michelle A.

Jim, I keep seeing talk of appropriate gear. I think I have what I need... But what are you leaning toward with the group? What I have insulated boots, snowpants, appropriate layers, plenty of hand/body warmers, goggles, multiple gloves including down mittens, 0 down bag, liner, down booties, emergency blanket, thermas for keeping my water from freezing, 4 season tent with Kelly, snowshoes, 2 pads. Even you're expertise and what others have posted, should we still go to dolly sods? Maybe there's another location that would bw better?

    February 14, 2013

    • Jim N.

Dolly Sods will not be as bad as Roaring Plains Michelle. It is the 6 mile walk straight up that has me concerned. By the time we get to Roaring Plains, it will be time to set up camp with no time to do the Canyon Rim. I think people in general are ready, but trying to tailor the trip to the time we have and making sure people are prepared for -15 wind chill is all.

      February 14, 2013

    • Michelle A.

      Thx Jim.

unfortunately I need to bow out. I injured my back last week and it hasn't healed up quite yet. Hopefully someone else can take my spot.

It looks cold, Jim. I'd probably need about 12 layers to sleep out in those temperatures ... My Texan blood is thin. My Hoth weather report was intended as a touch of levity, only.

      February 14, 2013

    • Jim N.

I know....I worry....a gift from my grandpa...plus 40 years experience out in this kind of weather...below 0 always gets my attention and with a group I tend not to joke as much until we hit the trail, just in case someone does not take it as deadly serious as they need to.

      February 14, 2013

  • Vince

Anyone can pick me up at Vienna Metro?

    February 12, 2013

    • Jim N.

Good, see you then, but don't expect me much before 7 PM as I am coming from Baltimore.

      February 14, 2013

    • Vince

Np, as long as I get out of the metro

      February 14, 2013

  • Jim N.

Ok wind chills predicted at -12 or colder, so you must have a balcalva/hat and scarves do help the neck area and gaiters help keep the lower legs warm as well. If you do not have inusulated boots and very warm sock system, this IS NOT your trip. That being said, the snow will not be melting, which is my preference.

Jim, I only have a 0 degree bag but am sleeping in Kelley's 4 season tent. Does anyone have one I can borrow or do you think i'll be ok with the 0?

    February 11, 2013

    • KingsleyC

Michelle, my jetboil model is 4 season and urs is 3 season. the 4 season model add a feature to ensure flow more efficient in cold weather.

      February 12, 2013

    • KingsleyC

if urs doesnt work, u can borrow mind. hope mine works!

      February 12, 2013

  • Michelle A.

Hopefully I can catch a ride with someone who has 4 wheel drive. Or depending on if we need more appropriate vehicles I could bring my double cab truck (only its a bit $$ for gas but way safer)

    January 20, 2013

    • Jim N.

This is my old winter stompin' grounds from before you were born, so I tend to go straight up...no wimpy driving up the mountain on this trip, lol!

      February 12, 2013

    • Jim N.

Oh, I did mention we will be hiking up the steepest trail in WV....at night, right? Think of this as the next training hike, but with a backpack on, lol!

      February 12, 2013

  • Jim N.

Ok, I figure the 4 girls will bunk up in a 2 x 2 fashion to help reduce weight.

If anyone needs a ride to Centreville I should be leaving DC at about 5:30 p.m.

    February 11, 2013

I'll be meeting at Centreville and have space for 3 others in my jeep.

I have a 2 person, 4-season tent I would be happy to share with another lady for this trip, so let me know if you are in need and interested. Of course, I'll expect you'll help carry the load with me.

      January 27, 2013

    January 16, 2013

  • Steve

Please let me in! I've got all the gear and I missed out on the North Fork trip.

    January 16, 2013

    • Jim N.

Who said you are out of NFM?

      January 16, 2013

    • Steve

Well I've been on the waiting list for a month or two and already scheduled something else for that weekend. No worries I know that's a popular hike.

      January 16, 2013

  • Jim N.

Katrina, this trip is much more difficult than North Fork Mountain....and that one is quite strenuous.

    January 16, 2013

    • Jim N.

North Fork Mountain will be a good trip for you to "bite your teeth into". After that you can see if you "want some more"! ;-)

      January 16, 2013

    • Katrina

      Ok jim thanks!

      January 16, 2013

  • Doug M

Hi Jim, nice meeting you last week at the Purple Fiddle and Seneca Rocks! Are you planning to go over that deep rocky scramble on the Rim Trail? That sounds pretty iffy for me in snow let alone snowshoes. (Unless there is enough snow to solidly fill all the crevasses.) Could you post your planned route? It sounds quite different from the summer trip you linked to.

    1 · January 16, 2013

    • Jim N.

There are some rocks for sure Doug and yes, this is a very strenuous trip. I do not post my planned route for many trips due to other groups always copying them Doug, but it sounds like you know the Canyon Rim Route, so you know what you are in for.

      January 16, 2013

  • Katrina

Fast starts the 13th. Wont be able to do this one. Have fun and see you all on warmer weather!
