Announcing a new Meetup for The Washington Backpackers Meetup Group!

What: Big Schloss Hike and Backpacking 101 Trip

When: Saturday, December 11,[masked]:00 PM

Where: Wolf Gap Campground
Wolf Gap Rd & Trout Run Rd
Edinburg, VA 22824

Ok by request is a hike to Big Schloss with a Winter Backpacking 101 trip for the people who want to learn how to winter backpack in a safe environment! Hike description can be found here:

I like to make a campfire in the winter, so will do this trip in the George Washington National Forest where it is legal to have campfires (it is not legal in Shenandoah National Park). We will meet at the Wolf Gap Campground in Columbia Furnace, Va. Please give yourself at least a 15 degree margin of error for your sleeping bag. So if the low is 20 degrees, please have at least a 5 degree sleeping bag. You will live in a 20 degree bag on a 20 degree night, but will not sleep much if at all. If you have not done a trip with me before, you MUST contact me about your equipment and get me your contact information at least 2 days before the trip as I do not get paid to track you down to be sure you are properly prepared so you do not endanger the group. I will be doing the Buzzard Hill Hike with Dominic earlier in the day, then driving to Wolf Gap Campground where we will meet and set up camp. We may take a hike after camp is set up, the fire is roaring and dinner done, depending on the group, so come prepared with headlamps with fresh/extra batteries. Sunday morning we will hike to Big Schloss and enjoy the fabulous views as the new bridge is open! This will allow those of you who want to see the football game a chance to get back to town or a bar in time! You will learn how to set up your tent, how to cook, and how to handle yourself in the winter weather and go over backpacks, etc. giving you a chance to strut your stuff up the mountain! So be bold/adventurous and come over to the " blue" side and learn how "cool" it really is to winter backpack! Picture is from a trip last let us show you how to "do it" and not talk about it like most other people!
