Thanks to everyone who came to yesterday's book club meeting; we had five attendees and discussing various topics arising from the pieces in the book.
I'm going to make a few changes for future book club meetups, since only 5 of the 12 RSVPs attended:
* It was suggested that the 6PM time made parking difficult, so future book clubs will be pushed back to 7PM. That will also give attendees more time to get to the venue after work.
* I should have made it clear that's it's perfectly OK to come to the book club even if you haven't finished the book. ? We can always discuss the portions that most people have read, or someone can summarize chapters for people who haven't read them, and the resulting discussions often go off on tangents anyway; the book is often just a starting point.
There was also a suggestion that we could read 3-5 articles about some particular math topic, resulting in only 20 or so pages of reading. ? (These would be informal articles from places like "Discover" or "New Scientist", not formal journal articles.) ? That's an interesting idea, but it's more work than just picking a book about a topic; you have to pick the topic and then go look for news stories about it. ? Would that interest you? ? Please let me know, or discuss possible topics and/or articles here.
