This is unfortunate and sorry to say but there is an isolated thunder storm warning for 4th and 5th of June, Friday and Saturday. Most of the next week is not looking good as well. I will check the weather again for 3rd and 4th weekend of June before deciding on a meet up date. For now, I think it will be better to postpone the hike indefinitely until the rainy season passes by. Thanks everyone and have a good week end,

Click on Map and directions to Vienna Metro Station South-Side Kiss & Ride from Interstate-66 (Exit 62) & Virginia-234/Nutley Street Fellow Hikers, here are some initial details for the day we hike together to Old Rag Mountain, considered one of the most spectacular hikes in the United States. It is by far the most popular hike on the Blue Ridge to the degree that a farmer’s field had to be purchased for over-flow parking.
Description: Just to make sure you are prepared, while going up hill, there is a significant elevation change and a strenuous rock scramble that requires good upper body strength. There are places where you’ll have to take your pack off to slither through cracks in the rocks, shush along on your butt around a boulder with little or nothing to hold onto, lower yourself down a crag and hip-hop across rocks. But then all this adds to the fun and adventure hiking on Old Rag. However, with more experienced and strong hikers in the group, passing by few difficult parts should not be a problem at all. OK … the good side is all of this happens as you near the top. Before that is a pretty steady ascent up a switch-backed footpath. Once to the top, given a clear day, we’ll enjoy a 360 degree panoramic view of the Blue Ridge and will quickly forget the effort required to get to this place. The remainder of the trek is relatively easy. We’ll descend on the back side of the mountain and follow a gravel fire road back to our car. Details:
Hiking length: This is a strenuous 8.0 mile loop. Hiking Time: Around 6 hours
Elevation Gain: 2,510 ft
Food and Drinks: Once on the circuit trail, there are no water fountains or snack machines on the way. Take at least 2 quarts of water / gatorade per person along with some snacks. Dehydration is one of the most prevalent issues. Although you need to be sure you have plenty of water and food, it is a good idea to pack as lightly as possible.
Attire: It is advisable to dress comfortably and wear sturdy shoes that will support your ankles and allow you to to get a foothold without slipping.
Pets: Pets are strictly forbidden on Old Rag for their own and hikers' safety.
Entrance Fee details are here
1-7 Day Vehicle Fee: $ 15
1-7 Day Individual Fee: $8
Directions: Although Old Rag Mountain is within the boundaries of Shenandoah National Park, most people approach it from the park's eastern boundary. Follow these directions to get to the trailhead:
