Beach Campout - Assateague Island, MD State Park, Columbus Day weekend 2012

Beach camping on Assateague Island, in the Maryland State Park Campground. Columbus day weekend, Oct [masked] (Fri-Mon). Check in to the campground anytime after 2pm Friday. We will plan to have a group dinner on Saturday night.

The campground office closes at 10pm. Is there someone who will definitely be there before 10pm Friday? I would like to be called and get the key-code for access to the campground. Can't enter the campground after 10pm without the code.

Assateague weather: http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/MDSPAS:13

State park info: http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/eastern/assateaguecamping.asp

Island info: http://www.assateagueisland.com/

Campground Office/Ranger Station: When the campground is open, the office may be reached at [masked].

The MD state park has nice bath-house facilities, with hot water showers and real flush toilets (vs the primitive National park facilities - porta-potties and cold showers). Join the group as they head to the Beach for a Fall Campout on the Beach. See wild horses stroll thru the campsites and drive over to Ocean City which is just minutes away. You can even Rent Kayaks and take a bay-side tour or JUST RELAX...

$50/person for the entire long weekend. But if two people are able to share a car and share a tent, just reserve one slot and pay $50 for the two people. (Add in the comment field that you have two people.) No pets allowed. (The J-loop camping that allows pets seems to be fully booked.) They can allow three cars and three tents and six people per site. So the cars and tents are the limitation. (There is a parking overflow area if there are too many cars.) I organized the Assateague beach island campouts the last two years, with great success.

FYI, Here are links to the prior events I organized: http://www.meetup.com/DCADVENTURES/events/14686784/

http://www.meetup.com/dcadventurers/events/20729121/

I went ahead and booked the sites for the Columbus Day weekend, Oct[masked], Friday - Monday: I-Loop, sites I101/I102/I103/I104/I105/I107. This is in the Maryland Assateague State Park, right by the beach, with nice bath-house facilities.

The event capacity is between 18 and 36 people (depending on how many folks are willing to share a tent). If people will RSVP to this event soon, I can add more sites while the State Park still has open capacity. The more the merrier...

Bring a tent (or share), sleeping bag, pad/air-mattress. The tent will need 15" (ok) or 18" (preferred) long stakes for the tents, to grip in the loose sand. (Or buy wooden dowels at the hardware store.) The normal little stakes won't work. (Maybe can use string to tie the tents to the nearby shrubs.) Bring firewood, charcoal, lighter-fluid. Stove/cooking-equipment if you want to cook or make coffee in morning. Bring bug-spray. Sun lotion. Umbrella, chair, blanket, etc. Flashlight. Cooler, food, beverage. Optional but nice: Screen-tent to put over the picnic table, to keep bugs away. Lantern. Fly-swatter.

It is essential that you do not leave food out (even in coolers) where the ponies can get them. Don't leave food in the tents, or the ponies will tear the tent to get to it. Pack food in the car overnight and when you are away from the site. The ponies look sweet/cute, but they can bite/kick, so stay away from them.

DIRECTIONS
8 MILES SOUTH OF OCEAN CITY MD, AND MAY BE REACHED VIA MD RT 50 TO MD RT 611.
Cross the bridge over to the island. Turn at the second right turn. (The first right turn is a long drive to the National Park. We are camping in the MD state park.)

You don't have to stay for the Monday Columbus Day. You can attend just part of the Friday-Monday period. You don't need to stay for the whole time. We will save room for you if you arrive late.

Only register on this meetup if you are camping with us. Yes you are welcome to come by and do day-visits w/o meetup-charge, in which case you shouldn't rsvp to the full event.

Thanks for the Snickerdoodle Smores!! Yumm!

The group and weekend were great! There were good conversations, great weather (until Sunday), beautiful scenery, and fireside chats.

Great idea for the beach camping event. First event w/the group. Everyone was super pleasant and welcoming. Sign me up now for 2013! I rented bikes for one day, rode around the island and saw wild ponies. Thanks Kit for organizing. Only wish the holiday weekend was longer so we could have more time for smores and singing The Beatles songs by the bonfire at night!

Congrats Kit on 5th year organizing. You take good care of us. Outstanding, regardless of abbreviation from storm. Enjoyed everyone's fun company! :)

The Porters had to cancel unfortunately, so I opened the rsvp's again.

    October 5, 2012

  • Kit

I've closed the event. If someone new wants to join, please call me[masked]-2463. There is room for more tents, but not for cars, so would need to leave the car at the entrance parking-lot. (Correction to the assignments, Christine & Sharon are not driving together.)

  • Jill

SuperFun is booked Saturday, so anything booked through them would also be Sunday. However, they drop in at a different location w/in the National Park (farther south on the bay) than the Park rental place is located. So, it wouldn't be a joint outing. I'm still working on what they have available Sunday and what time.

OK! Weather forecast looks sunny, high in 60's.

How about carpooling? I can meet at Van Dorn metro (No. VA) at 4:30pm Friday. (Could meet at New Carrolton MD, but it is confusing since two separate parking lots.)

I have a tent and I can drive too but can't leave until Saturday, maybe Friday but it maybe after 5pm

When you arrive, check-in at the ranger-station campground-office on the Assateague island (the second right after crossing the bridge onto the island). Office is on the right.
    Tell them this:
MD Assateague State Park campground, I-Loop, sites I101/I102/I103/I104/I105/I107 ; October 5-8.
Officially the office closes at 10pm, though I was told they happened to be open till 11pm last year (due to lots of late arrivals).
Jill and I posted our cell #s, so you can call and get the access-code for the gate, if you are running late.

    September 28, 2012

  • Kit

I think Jill's Sunday paddling and Kit's Sunday paddling are the same event; just getting the boats from different sources. (Georgene signed up for a Sunday 10am kayak tour, which would be separate.) But I think Jill is also planning to do a Saturday paddle...

    September 28, 2012

  • Jill

Hi, Kit. Karen and I are carpooling and will be there by noon on Friday. Will you already be there checked in on all sites, or do we check in for a site under our names? We paid separately and have separate tents. And I'm happy to call SuperFun and reserve a kayaking/canoe outing for Sunday, if you would like for me to. Payment isn't required until the day of, but everyone would need to take care of their own payment at that time. Some of their new kayaks are SUP/kayak hybrids, which is what I'd like to try.

Hope the weather is as great as it was two years ago!

    September 25, 2012

    • Nina

Hi Jill - I sent you a message! Thanks.

      September 27, 2012

    • Bill

Sounds great! Kit is planning one on Sunday afternoon. I assume two different paddling events?

      September 27, 2012

  • Kit

Please email me directly with your full name(s) and cell-phone #: use the Send-Email link on my profile (Kit).
I want to give the park ranger a list of names who are coming, to reduce confusion/problems during check-in. My cell is[masked]-2463. Thanks. Kit.

    September 26, 2012

  • Kit

I should have clarified: Last year we did the paddling trip on the Sunday afternoon, so that would be Oct 7. Let's say noon to 2pm. Does that sound OK? If anyone wants to go out on Saturday Oct 6, that should be reserved now, since they have a lot of bookings already. (But I may adjust the date/time based on the weather forecast.) Maybe bring a picnic lunch with us.

    September 26, 2012

  • Kit

OK, we can't wait to place boat reservations. Here is the response I got:
    Hi,

Yes you are able to reserve boats. However, I already have a reservation for 9 single kayaks on the 6th which leaves me with only 2 sit inside and 2 sit on top available that day. I have three tandem kayaks available both days right now.

As for canoes, I have 6 reserved for a long weekend, but still have approx. 15 that are available.

Please let me know what you will be interested in and which day. I'll also need to know when you would want to rent them and for how long as it will be a busy weekend in this area and if the weather is nice we will probably be very busy.

If you have any further questions just let me know.

I can personally attest to Super Fun and they provide a knowledgeable guide. Fun, interactive paddles, for sure. Love Assateague and I'm looking forward to it!

I know of two rental options: Ayers is cheaper, but not sure if they deliver to Assateague, vs have to pick it up.

Kit, I recommend using Super Fun Eco Tours to do a group canoe/kayak rental. They are fantastic, knowledgeable, and will meet the group in the Nat'l Park on the bay side at a time of our choosing. They also have upgraded equipment, much nicer than the park rentals, and kayak/paddleboard hybrids, which is what I'm interested in trying. That's just my suggestion based on my experience there.

    August 13, 2012

  • Kit

Hi, thanks for the early RSVP's. I checked the park service reservation site and was able to book one additional adjacent site (I107) and increase the max-attenance a little.
Let's plan a group dinner on Saturday night (and maybe Sunday night too). And plan a canoe outing on the national park bay-side on Sunday.

    August 13, 2012

  • Kit

Each camp-site has a fire-pit with a cooking-grill, so you don't need to bring a grill. Some of us will bring a camping-stove for cooking (e.g., boil water for coffee).

    August 10, 2012

  • Kit

Note, there is a good Food Lion grocery, and Subway and other fast food on Rt 113 (Berlin MD) just a few miles before you get to Ocean City MD. When heading east on Rt 50, turn right/south onto Route 113. The grocery and fast-food are soon on the right.
Then proceed south on Rt 113 and turn left onto Assateague Road (Route 376). When it ends, turn right onto Stephen Decatur Highway (Route 611), which will take you to Assateague island. That is a good route to drive anyway, not out-of-the-way.

    August 10, 2012

  • Kit

    Also asked:
    > Do people generally share grills or is it best to cook and prepare our own food independently?
Yes bring some food to share, but bring enough food that you don't end up going hungry. Also if everyone buys one bundle of firewood on the way in, we will have enough for a good bonfire on Saturday and Sunday nights.

    August 10, 2012

  • Kit

Regarding a tent, it is great if you can find someone to share with. Post a note here that you are looking for someone to share with. If you need to buy a tent, Target & Walmart have nice ones for $30 or so (if you don't mind made-in-china)...
Also, we can go canoeing/kayaking on Sunday in the National Park area. They have cheap canoe rentals, or you can bring your own boat.

    August 10, 2012

  • Kit

    I was asked:
    > What does the $50 cover exactly?

The campground reservation fee was $500 for the five sites for three nights, which I paid up-front. So the $50 is to cover that expense plus some incidentals.

Hi...I'm hoping to catch a ride as it is more fun this way. Additionally, I would like to leave my car suitable for two adults behind. I can meet you anywhere in the .Washington, D.C. area.

On a separate note. I have a five person tent if you would like to split the cost. Cheers,
    Bill

    July 22, 2012

  • Kit

OK Jill, thanks for letting me know. For new registrations: Don't indicate a guest, if the two of you are sharing a tent (since then you are just using one slot). If you do "+1" on the guests, you will be charged $100 for the two of you. Just indicate no guests, and put the note in the comment-text. Yeah this is confusing since I am tracking tents, not the number of individuals... (but I need to know the total count of people too)

    July 16, 2012

  • Jill

Kit, my "+1" didn't show up on my RSVP and I don't see that I can edit it. Is that a problem?
