Bridge Day Weekend - Whitewater Rafting 10/19/12

The New River Gorge in Fayette County West Virginia is 876 ft above water level. One day a year, for six hours only, it is open to pedestrians, rapellers, bungee jumpers and SKYDIVERS! This year that day is Saturday, October 20 and we will be going to watch this spectacular event. Many base jumpers come from as far as Europe and Australia to participate.

On the following day (Sunday) we will be Whitewater Rafting on the Gauley River, an intense 12 mile stretch of more than 40 rapids, 12 of which are Class V. Alternately we will raft the Lower New River, a 15 mile stretch of 21 rapids ranging from Class I to Class IV (your choice).

We will be camping out locally on Friday and Saturday nights and partaking in a pig roast on Saturday night. You gotta put this on your bucket list!!!

Leaving: Friday, Oct 19 about 4pm (or earlier if we agree) Returning: Sunday, Oct 21 about 2230

Cost: $210 for the Upper Gauley River, $169 for the Lower New River. Includes: Rafting, campground fees, 3 meals- pig roast Saturday, breakfast and lunch Sunday, drinks, snacks, Bridge Day itself is free, but it is 5 hours away. I'm going to Bridge Day but won't be doing the rafting - however, I'd still love to be included in the camping and the pig roast - is this possible? Do you know what campsite the group will be at? Also, I'm leaving from Richmond and have an extra space, maybe two, if anyone wants to carpool.

This sounds wonderful! But which rafting course would you recommend for two novices? (If there are even spots left at this point.)

Wish I could go. My schedule is hectic from my move to MD. I may try to make it though.

Sounds like a blast! I hear they are adding a catapult for the really daring base jumpers this year. Probably not going to make it so have a great time.

Will there be anything to eat other than pig, at the roast?
