Hexayurt Construction Workshop

  • Apr 5, 2014 · 1:00 PM
  • Near Glenmont Metro (Red Line)

Learn how to make a Hexayurt!

At Burning Man 2011, the satellite photo revealed there were over 500 hexayurts on the Playa.  In 2012, that number was over 750!!   For 2013, who knows... 1000?   The DC Container for 2013 alone had at least nine hexayurts on it, and their popularity is continually increasing.  What makes this foamboard-based igloo so popular at Burning Man?  Come find out....

Always wanted to build a Hexayurt but didn't know how to get started? Building one but need some pointers? Never heard the word "Hexayurt" before but want an amazing durable tent for the Playa and other events? This totally hands-on workshop is for you!

In under two hours you will learn the basics of Hexayurt construction and take a tour of a life-sized yurt that has been to Burning Man and back. You can make a scale model of your future Hexayurt,  and/or get in taping practice using a piece of actual foam board that you can take home with you.  Materials provided! Topics covered include:

• Materials used and where to get them;

• Hexayurt advantages and disadvantages;

• How to hinge, why to hinge, where to hinge;

• Hexayurt Life on the Playa;

• Why/how to bevel your edges;

• How to get it to Burning Man (safely);

•  Heating & Cooling for comfort;

• Mods, upgrades, safety and sanity

Workshop fee: $10 donation for supplies, to be collected at workshop.  Donation is not mandatory: if you don't wanna construct one of the models, you don't gotta feel obligated to pay anything.

Location: Wheaton, Maryland.  Walking distance from Glenmont Metro Station.  Directions will be mailed out to RSVP'd attendees a week before the event.

This is gonna be a really fun workshop, I hope you can join us!

PS: This is the 2nd Hexayurt workshop I have held. Even if you went to my workshop last year, there are new techniques and a new H12 hexayurt I will be demonstrating this year.  It will be even more interesting than last year.

    I just sent out the email with the Addendum/Notes, covering all of the questions I was asked since the workshop and a whole lot more. If you did not receive it, (1) check your SPAM folder and if nothing there (2) drop me a message through Meetup and I'll find another way to send it.

    If you enjoyed the Workshop, please post a followup review here on Meetup. If you did not, please contact me and let me know how I could have done better. Thanks all!

    I have updated the RSVP's based on who signed the Sign-in sheet. Many people showed up late and probably did not know there WAS a sign-in sheet, so if I mis-marked you as a "No-Show" drop me a quick note and I'll fix it. I will be sending out some addendum notes later this week for all who attended.

    Someone left a straight-edge/level at the workshop. It has a laser built into one end. If this is yours and you want it back, please contact me.

    We need 3-4 portable tables, like card or catering tables. If you have one you can bring, PLEASE post that you are bringing it and its size (if you know) on this Meetup conversation board so we all know how many are coming. Thanks!!!

    Hey all, the email with directions and notes went out yesterday. If you did not receive it (or if you singed up after it went out) contact me directly and I'll get it to you. Weather forecast for Saturday looks promising right now, though a bit brisk. Final update to be posted Friday afternoon. I'm happy to see there is so much interest in hexayurts!
