El-Wire for Costumes and Art

Enhance your costumes with El-wire! What is it? Imagine a flexible thin wire that glows like neon. El-wire (a.k.a. Electroluminescent Wire) is all the rage for club/rave wearables and art for Burning Man and elsewhere. At this workshop you will learn how to install it SAFELY on your costumes and art.

It's been quite a while since our last workshop, and this time I have some of the latest innovations in El-wire to demonstrate. Even if you have dabbled with El-wire before, I think everyone will learn something useful from this event.

We will be covering the basics of soldering, installing, and powering El-wire. In addition I will be covering "no soldering required" techniques for those who don't want to invest in soldering equipment.

Attendance is *FREE*.  We are limiting to 25 people to allow more time for one-on-one assistance.

You are encouraged to bring your projects!! We will have at least an hour dedicated to hands-on project time where the instructors will assist you with questions or problems. You need to bring your own El-wire and inverters. Order these at least 2 weeks in advance if you don't already have stuff. A scant few El-wire kits will be available for purchase at the event, but we will be charging a premium price.

Where to buy El-wire? Here are some resources:

Amazon.com (many 9ft and 11ft lengths w/battery inverter for $10-15)
NeonString.com (long lengths and inverters)
CoolNeon.com (in their catalog section, click on "Cool Neon")
VirtualVillage.com (Chinese supplier -- allow extra shipping time)
ElWirePros.com
Newegg.com (sells 3 meter kits in many colors for $8.28 each)

(Note: We list these sources for your perusal, but we do not advocate or vouch for any of them specifically.)

Warning: The "white" connectors sold by NeonString and CoolNeon are considered unsafe. Be aware of this when buying your El-wire.

What To Bring:
* Your costume or art project
* Any size/color/length of El-wire
* Inverters and batteries
* Needle, thread, tape, glue (however you want to attach wire to art)
* (optional) Soldering iron and solder
* (optional) Hand tools: wire stripper, wire cutter, box knife, "extra hand" stand
* (optional) heat shrink tubing

* (optional) Bifocals, loupes, jeweler's glasses

    This was a fabulous workshop - I went into the workshop very unsure of how to use El-wire, and now I feel extremely confident. Can't wait to make some awesome projects!

    Thank you very much Wolf and Wax!

    That was a well balanced intro to many technical and logistical details that will go a long way to help in planning and making more brightness. Great job accommodating people with a wide variety of experience and interests, I was highly engaged the entire time and enjoyed the ease of your teamwork.

    Anyone looking to get to work on their own clothing and projects will surely benefit from the general content and even more so from the chance to pick the brains of these two sharp, friendly and productive artists.

    I'll definitely keep an eye out for the LED workshop too.

    I am new to Meetup and haven't figured out how to change my RSVP to +1 or to drop my spot. I don't think I can make it today.

  • Wolf

    Soren - As long as there is space you should be able to change your RSVP here on Meetup to have +1 (or more) guests.

    Is it alright if I bring a friend? Also, do I look better in blue, purple, or green EL?

    Sorry, I can't make this Saturday. My space is open to anyone on the waiting list.

    Directions & important info have been mailed out to everyone who is RSVP confirmed. If you did not receive it: (1) Check your SPAM box first, (2) PM me directly for a copy. We have a waiting list!!! If you cannot make it, please un-RSVP to allow someone else in.

    This conversation section on Meetup.com has been really quiet; usually we have a slew of posts about the workshop by now. Is this microphone still on? Hello? hello?

    Amazon.com has 9' and 10' strings in several colors for as low as $6.06 (with free shipping). See item B003J99JW4 as an example for blue wire. For green, see B003J98LZA. Red? try B003J9BCOW. All of these listings use the correct (black) connector. Remember: please buy your wire before the workshop, because we have to charge more than double these prices to buy our meager supply.
