Did you miss the Brazilian Carnival in Rio this year? That's okay—it happens to the best of us. In honor of Brazilian Carnival, we're KICKING OFF our powerful new partnership with BETA Martial Arts Academy with a beginners class on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu! This class is for men and women of ALL ages and abilities.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu focuses on submitting opponents without using strikes. It enables a smaller, weaker person to defeat a larger, more powerful attacker. Women are encouraged to participate in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes so that female practitioners may become empowered to defend themselves and escape real-life confrontations, all the while getting a great workout.
Did you know that February is African-American History Month?
After practicing our new moves on the mat, we'll go 3 blocks to the famous Eatonville restaurant for dinner with our instructors! Dinner is optional and is NOT included in the event price. We'll receive a historical introduction that will explain the restaurant's links to African-American author Zora Neale Hurston and a special meeting with the chef who will discuss the food.

What's included:
- Group introductions and facilitation by your Meetup Organizer Nejla Routsong
- 1.5 hour Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu beginners lesson for men and women of all ages and abilities by BETA Academy staff
- Option to join us for dinner at Eatonville (dinner NOT included in event price) with historical introduction and meeting with the chef

How to get there: Please use the address given above (1353 Florida Ave NW) and NOT the old Columbia Road address. The academy has recently moved. Click here for directions on Google maps.
Schedule: We'll arrive and do introductions from 4:00 to 4:30, receive our lesson from 4:30-6pm and have optional dinner at 6:15pm.
Carpool: I suggest taking the metro. U St (green and yellow line) is the closest. Please make other carpool arrangements in the comments below.
What to bring: Wear a t-shirt and shorts or sweats. Bring cash for dinner if you are joining us.

EVERYONE did such a fantastic job at this event! Not least of which our instructor and his wife who are amazing martial artists and teachers. I'm so sorry, but I lost all of the photos I took at this event. :( Still figuring out how this new-fangled camera works... Hope to see some of you (the girls!) on Sunday at Femme Fatale Female Fitness Bootcamp!!!
