Let's kick off the Martin Luther King Jr Day holiday weekend making some new friends and attending the Smithsonian's official MLK Day Jr program on Friday evening! We'll meet for dinner at 5:30pm at the Old Post Office to get to know each other before seeing the program.
UPDATE: I've just been informed that the Old Post Office closed today due to a power outage. New meeting place for dinner at 5:30 only if the old post office is still closed at 5:30! Potbelly at 1299 Pennsylvania Ave. I'll check it out around 5p and update this. Check in the comments below for updates!
The keynote speaker of the evening is Environmental Justice Activist Marjora Carter. From her bio on TED: "Majora Carter redefined the field of environmental equality, starting in the South Bronx at the turn of the century. Now she is leading the local economic development movement across the USA."

This event is produced by the Anacostia Smithsonian Museum, although it is being held at the Natural History Museum.
We'll honor King's legacy by learning about modern-day African-Americans like Carter who are making a difference in their communities. We'll also watch a live performance by Grammy-nominated Hip-Hop Artist Christylez Bacon (video below).
The Angle: Living Artist (int with Christylez Bacon) from Park Triangle Productions on Vimeo.
This event is expected to be very crowded, but when I told them we are coming, the museum was kind enough to offer to reserve seats just for our group! In order to avoid having a high RSVP count and low turnout, I am charging $10 to RSVP, but I will refund the $10 to anyone who attends the event or cancels 24 hours in advance. That means you cannot join our group or be guaranteed a seat in the reserved section unless you have paid the $10 RSVP fee.

How to Get There: The Old Post Office is across the street from the Federal Triangle metro station (blue and orange lines). Or it is also a few blocks from Navy-Archives station (yellow and green lines). Use this link to get directions.
What to Bring: Camera, business cards for handing out to new friends, money for dinner at the Old Post Office.
This was a wonderful show put on by the Anacostia Smithsonian at the Natural History Museum. Marjora Carter is an AMAZING person who is improving communities all over the US, and Christylez Bacon is such a FUN musician and performer! We loved every second of it. I'm so glad everyone came out and we all got to meet each other beforehand for dinner. Great group of people!

This was a fantastic event! I had great fun and met some more really nice people that make up this group. The speaker, Majora, shed light on a few issues that caused me to pause and want to explore more on my own. Christylez is an extremely talented musician and I have definitely become a new fan of his.

I would like to attend, but probably won't make it for the dinner. If I pay the rsvp fee and don't attend the dinner, but attend the program, will I be refunded the fee?

The Post Office Building food stalls were closed down today due to a power outage in the entire building. Maybe the power will be back later, but maybe not...
