Dolley Madison's Washington

Hi, I wanted to do a walk that highlighted the vestiges of Federal-style architecture remaining in downtown DC. Then I went to the 1812 exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery and saw a group of paintings that featured Dolley Madison and some of her social circle. So now I'll see if I can put the two together into a tour.

A great excuse to wander around the District and learn about all the buildings we walk by all the time without even noticing. Thanks John.

It was very interesting and presented with knowledge and humor. I enjoyed learning new things about my native DC and meeting new and fun people!

Thanks for putting this together. This was another interesting walk, especially the Federal-style Elephant and Castle. I am sure that James and Dolley would approve. Thank you.

If you do a tour of Takoma Park, we'll be there!

John, Great job!! 1st meetup. Can't wait to do another. An unexpected plus was the sharing of knowledge within the group along the way.

Just want to make sure I know where Lafayette Square is. I'm thinking of Lafayette Park across from the White House.

It appears that we are meeting at Lafayette Square, is that true?

Hi Theresa, Yep, the Andrew Jackson statue is in the middle of Lafayette Square, Lafayette is down in the SE corner.

Is there a rough idea of how far mileage wise this would be?

    • John H

It will just be around Lafayette Square and Foggy Bottom, so maybe 3 miles.
