Beginners Ride - Easy Pace - 5 to 9-Miles (No Drop)
It's time for another Beginners Ride to get to know the MTB tails of Fountainhead Park in Fairfax Station! Kyle Bondo will be hosting a Beginners Ride - Easy Pace - starting at the main parking lot to the right after driving into the park off Hampton Road. Please park near the pavilion and the mini-golf course and look for me next to my black Jeep and sporting the ever-so-stylish green/white/black Potomac Velo Club (PVC) jersey.

No charge -- all are welcome!

Main Group Ride -- The objective will be to leave the parking lot at 12:00pm-noon Saturday, and complete the first main loop to the picnic table (and possibly the back sections depending on the groups level and strength) of the Fountainhead MTB course at a nice, easy pace (approx. 5 to 9-miles depending what sections we do) making frequent stops to pick up stragglers if needed and returning to the parking lot around 2:00pm.

Fitness Level -- FH is a moderate trail that can challenge most seasoned riders. I plan on stopping often, picking up stragglers, and keeping it to an "easy pace" as advertised. You should be in enough shape to ride for at least one hour, but we will stop after every big feature for everyone to catch their breath. I have tons of patience, so if you're worried about being left behind -- don't be! Check out my other rides to see that "no drop" means "no drop"!

Rules: The only requirements is for all riders to have a good helmet -- NO HELMET, NO RIDE --, have your mountain bike in moderate working order, have tires with some tread, bring some water, and something to keep you warm (e.g. dress in layers). Temperature will be in the upper 60's, but inside the treeline at FH is about 10-degrees colder.

Volunteers: Volunteers are always appreciated! We are always looking for Ride Leaders in the more experienced riders willing to help out our beginner cadre learn the trails and gain some single-track skills!

Directions:

Northerners heading South to Fairfax Station:

1. I-66 West Bound
2. Exit onto Rt. 123 SOUTH (turns into Ox Rd.) for approx. 3 miles.
3. Right onto Henderson Rd.
4. Left on Hampton Rd.
5. Right into park.
6. Parking lot on the right.

Kyle, please don't cancel future rides maybe like you change the title you can change that you will not show and leave the ride open. People can still come out to meet new riders and enjoy the trails, if you cancel ride nearby rides will be discourage and not show. Other riders like me who have to drive 45 min to an hour may not see the changes in the meetup as we may be already on the road. Most of the time there will be someone with knowledge of the trail and can take the lead. If I signed up for a ride, 99% of the time I am there and with or without knowledge of the trail I am always willing to take the lead, it’s always good to learn new trails. The wind today was no concern, and it was actually a great ride. Thank you guys for showing up, I had a good time.

MTB is risky business and of course with have to be careful with weather conditions except at FH, LOL. Thanks for understanding.

No worries... I hear they even opened FH today for about 5-minutes... the management of that place is just full of mystery! ;)

Thank you, Kem for riding with those who wanted to! We will get a weekend with FH open some day in the near future... they can't close it forever! ;)

FH is closed and I'm going to cancel the alt LH location too. Just trying to get the bike on the car and the wind was crazy. Weather has winds from the NW at 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph -- which is not safe for a beginners ride. You are all welcome to ride on your own (as I know a few of you will still) and I'll keep the board open if some of you still want to meet up at LH. The wind chill is down to 9-degrees so the trail should still be rideable. Please be careful and we'll plan this again for next week! ;)

Oh wow I'm really late. I'll come anyway but don't wait for me. If you can let me know which trail you're going on, I'll follow and hopefully catch up.

Chances are that the MTB trail at Fountainhead will be closed on Saturday. Laurel Hill is our fall back location. If the FH Facebook page (search "Fountainhead Regional Park") shows it closed, we will meet at Laurel Hill at 12-noon.

    February 9, 2013

  • Jose T.

If FH does not open, are we going to laurel Hill?

    February 8, 2013

I haven't biked in a while...may be one of those stragglers you refer to Kyle. I'm looking forward to the ride nonetheless!
