LH Group Ride (FH Ride's Alt Location)

FOUNTAINHEAD RIDE IS CANCELED DUE TO THE PARK CLOSING THE MTB TRAILS -- FH HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK -- ALT LOCATION: LAUREL HILLS, LORTON, VA (GROUP RIDE)

The Fountainhead Regional Park Facebook page announced this morning that the trails are closed for another week straight. So unfortunately, I will be canceling the Fountainhead ride (again... x5) and we'll try again next week.

Alternate Ride -- Laurel Hill

Directions: From I-95, take Lorton Rd exit (exit 163), head west at bottom of ramp (a right turn whether coming north or south bound on I-95.) Giles Run (Laurel Hill) entrance is on the right about 1/2 mile down Lorton Road. Follow the driveway up until you see the prison complex on your right. The parking lot is on the left, next to the playground.

---------------------------------

Beginners Ride - Easy Pace - 5 to 9-Miles (No Drop)
It's time for another Beginners Ride to get to know the MTB tails of Fountainhead Park in Fairfax Station! Kyle Bondo will be hosting a Beginners Ride - Easy Pace - starting at the main parking lot to the right after driving into the park off Hampton Road. Please park near the pavilion and the mini-golf course and look for me next to my black Jeep and sporting the ever-so-stylish green/white/black Potomac Velo Club (PVC) jersey.

No charge -- all are welcome!

Main Group Ride -- The objective will be to leave the parking lot at 12:00pm-noon Saturday, and complete the first main loop to the picnic table (and possibly the back sections depending on the groups level and strength) of the Fountainhead MTB course at a nice, easy pace (approx. 5 to 9-miles depending what sections we do) making frequent stops to pick up stragglers if needed and returning to the parking lot around 2:00pm.

Fitness Level -- FH is a moderate trail that can challenge most seasoned riders. I plan on stopping often, picking up stragglers, and keeping it to an "easy pace" as advertised. You should be in enough shape to ride for at least one hour, but we will stop after every big feature for everyone to catch their breath. I have tons of patience, so if you're worried about being left behind -- don't be! Check out my other rides to see that "no drop" means "no drop"!

Rules: The only requirements is for all riders to have a good helmet -- NO HELMET, NO RIDE --, have your mountain bike in moderate working order, have tires with some tread, bring some water, and something to keep you warm (e.g. dress in layers). Temperature will be in the upper 60's, but inside the treeline at FH is about 10-degrees colder.

Volunteers: Volunteers are always appreciated! We are always looking for Ride Leaders in the more experienced riders willing to help out our beginner cadre learn the trails and gain some single-track skills!

Directions:

Northerners heading South to Fairfax Station:

1. I-66 West Bound
2. Exit onto Rt. 123 SOUTH (turns into Ox Rd.) for approx. 3 miles.
3. Right onto Henderson Rd.
4. Left on Hampton Rd.
5. Right into park.
6. Parking lot on the right.

Southerners heading North to Fairfax Station:

1. I-95 North Bound
2. Exit onto Rt. 123 NORTH (turns into Ox Rd.) for approx. 4.5 miles.
3. Left on Hampton Rd. for approx. 3 miles.
4. Left into park.
5. Parking lot on the right.

Tail Conditions
I am looking forward to riding with you guys and gals at Fountainhead this coming Saturday! Not all rain is equal and some light rain will not stop us unless they close the MTB tails Saturday morning. If you have concerns about the trails, I will post a cancellation ASAP.

FH Trail Hotline
You can call the Fountainhead Regional Park hot line anytime for trail conditions [masked] -- Press #1). If they are closed, we don't ride.

I know Arundel very well, if anyone is interested in riding it. It's about 5 miles from me. Lots of good little trails. Tiny area.

I will ride at Laurel Hill at 12, anyone else care to join?

It rained a lot this week, and this is what I was told...

"The Park Staff will make the final call but we would say "Not Good". Temperatures are suppose to dip below freezing both nights this weekend. When that happens evaporation (drying) almost stops. And then in the morning the temps are forecasted to rise right back up leaving the trail wet. Hopefully the Park Staff discover something better but we really shouldn't count on that."

    I wouldn't mind an alternate trail :/

      how about LAUREL HILL lol...

    From FH's Facebook page:

    Fountainhead Regional Park
Saturday March 2nd. The mountain bike trail is currently closed. The park staff would love to open the trail but mother nature just won't dry it out.

Sucks, my bike is out but I may get it ready, will see.

Every park in Fairfax County is dry and open -- what's going on at Fountainhead?? This never use to happen until the new trails were built. As a FCRPA rule of thumb, trails are closed for 24-hour per 1-inch of rain. Yet we've only had 0.3 in a week (http://afws.erh.noaa.gov/afws/county.php?state=51&county=059)... Fountainhead is really getting gunshy!

      new management, lol

If there is an alternative place, can someone make sure that there are directions to the new location (incredibly directionally challenged here). Will check site tomorrow - Thanks!!!

    March 1, 2013

  • Kem C.

I vote yes for Laurel Hill alternative, right down the street from FH anyways :P

    March 1, 2013

  • Kyle B.

The irony is that FH is open for the season as of March 1st... yet the MTB trails were closed today... go figure! ;P

    March 1, 2013

  • Kyle B.

Stand by for an alternate location this week since FH is "too sensitive to rain" this year. If they close FH (again ^5) then I suggest riding at Lorton Prison/Laurel Hills MTB trails.

    March 1, 2013

  • Sundara J

Also Conway-Robinson @ Gainesville, VA out there, its a ~4 mile loop has a little bit of everything .. the trails are not maintained - always open. Hoping FH is still open tho.

Rosaryville could be a good option. I don't ever remember it being too muddy but I'll let others chime in on that.
