Friday AM Schaeffer Intermediate Ride

A Friday morning intermediate ride at Schaeffer Farm for those w/ flexible schedules. Start time is listed as 10:00 am (but is FLEXIBLE - depending on what the group wants).

Here is the ride on strava:  http://app.strava.com/activities/48860655

The ride consists of the outer CC loop (about 9 miles). Pace will be 8-9 mph, thus a total ride time of aprox 1:15 (assuming we briefly stop twice at "four corners" and once at "the whoops"). The idea is to get in a good brisk ride to start your day.

The ride includes 3-4 small creek crossings, some log hops, a few moderate climbs, some good descents and plenty of roots.  The ride also includes Schaeffer's newly-built whoops section, which adds a whole new dimension.  Schaeffer is very flowy and not very technical = fast 'n furious and loads of fun!

Your "intermediate" level cardio and bike-handling skills may get tested, but your technical riding ability will not.   No rock gardens, boardwalk, skinnies, skills course or techy trials-like stuff.  Just good ol' fashioned cross-country mtb riding on some of the best trails in our area.

What to bring: Water, helmet (no helmet no ride), your mtb of course!, multi-tool, patch kit, extra tube (make sure it has the same valve you need for your wheel), air/pump.

Note: Please read the document "Meetup Ride Waiver" (found under menu: More > Files > Meetup Ride Waiver) before attending this event. Mountain biking is an inherently dangerous sport, and by attending this ride, you acknowledge and have read, agree to and fully understand the aforementioned waiver.

70's today in MoCo, w/ no rain today/tonight, so the trail should be reasonably nice in the AM. Looking forward to riding with u guys!

This could be my first ride with this group but I am unsure if I can keep up. Is it ok if I bail out mid-ride? I would not want to hold anybody back.

Hey Victor. I appreciate your concern. Schaeffer is an interesting place, in that a beginner can easily get around it without ever needing to dab a foot. Thus, the fun comes in the way of pace and cardio challenge. This ride is not intended to be a beginner-friendly ride - so the pace will be pushed, albeit within the group's limits. Yes, one can always bail. Luckily, the Schaeffer "cc outer loop" route consists of right turns at literally every intersection - so the group will not be forced to stop at every intersection to collect and direct lagging riders, as folks will know to "always turn right" to stay on route. Schaeffer is also well-marked and includes map stands at intersections. So getting lost is an impossibility. But we will be making a few stops at key intersections that should collect any laggers. So you may not need to bail.

Due to the change, looks like I can go. Weather still is looking awfully ugly. How well does Schaeffer drain?

    May 7, 2013

    • Garrett W.

Drains pretty well. Patrick and I rode Schaeffer last Thursday AM after the rainy week we had, and it was fine. Thursday is supposed to be sunny/warm, so that will help dry things out a bit by fri AM.

I really wish Shaeffer wasn't an hour drive from here or I'd be in.

We will likely grab lunch at Dogfishead or Mi Rancho after the ride. It'll be a good time. C'mon . . .

I wanted to join this ride. But looking at Traffic at that time I don't see how I can make it from Alexandria on time. I get off of work at 7am. If the ride changes to a later time in the future, I'm in 100% plus one.

    April 30, 2013

    • Garrett W.

What is ideal for u? Lets try to get a consensus - majority rules.

      April 30, 2013

    • Jamal W.

Well I get off at 7am in Alexandria. I'm guessing even with rush hour I can make it by 9-930. I'd have to give it a test run first tho.

      April 30, 2013

  • Garrett W.

Folks, I'm trying to optimize the start time so that it is as convenient for as many people as possible. Please let me know what time is ideal for u to attend. Please note that it is considered poor form to post a desired start time and then fail to show for that start time. LOL.

Might be able to do this, though it's a hike for me. I'm going to RSVP yes on this, with the hopes of it being officially announced so you have a better shot at a few riding partners. If I can't do it, I'll cancel (I have a Kennedy Center gig the night before)...

Do you work that day? I have the day off. Dodging rush hour would make it more likely that I can go. And what about the rain?

      April 29, 2013

    • Garrett W.

My workday is flexible on wed. I can do 9:00, 10:00, Whatever. Just LMK. 20% chance of rain for wed - should not be a problem. Have you ridden the new whoops section? Hit it for the first time on Sunday - big fun!
