Hoyles Mill INTERMEDIATE Ride

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: The Hoyles Mill Trail connects Schaeffer Farm with Black Hill Regional Park in Germantown, Montgomery County, Maryland. This is an out-and-back ride in between the two parks. We’ll start at the Schaeffer Farm parking lot, ride the Hoyles Mill Trail to Black Hill Regional Park, then ride the Hoyles Mill Trail back to Schaeffer Farm. Total mileage is about 13 miles. Ride time will be about 1.5 hours. The trail consists of about 9 miles of singletrack that is mostly smooth with a few moderate climbs and few slightly rocky sections. The remaining 4 miles of the ride is on paved trail or road. Further information is available at: http://www.montgomeryparks.org/PPSD/ParkTrails/trails_MAPS/hoyles_mill_trail.shtm.

FITNESS LEVEL: 3-4 (see http://www.sacredrides.com/skill-and-fitness-ratings)

SKILL LEVEL: 4-5 (see http://www.sacredrides.com/skill-and-fitness-ratings)

Go .3 miles (watch for the speed cameras!) At the traffic circle, continue straight to stay on Schaeffer Rd and go 1.3 miles. Turn left onto the gravel road that leads to the Schaeffer Farm parking lot.

And here I thought this ride would be boring! The black hills section made it all worthwhile. That, and the fact that all of you bring the awesome.

Didn't know it wasn't plural- yesterday was the first I had heard of the place. (Wonder if we can get people to stop saying PatapsAco, too??) Anyhow, I would be down for a Black Hill- only ride some time...think about posting one in "suggestions"...bet there would be a lot of takers!

Michael - I'm down for exploring more of Black Hill - those were some fun trails. Make it happen!

I just discovered something about this trail. On the trail, there are a series of white towers, and I didn't know what they were until now. I think they belonged to the now defunct National Capital Skeet and Trap Club. I was looking up the club after hearing about it from someone at Bull Run. Then, I was led to some flickr photos, and recognized the towers. At least I think they are the same towers....

Those are on the Seneca Ridge Trail, not Hoyles Mill.

      July 27, 2013

    • Laura

Yes, that makes more sense. But, I could have sworn it was Hoyles Mill. I am going to plan my next ride to check them out again.

Thanks everyone. Great ride, great company. Hoyles Mill may be fast and flowing (maybe even a little brisk today), but the Black Hill trails are a blast! Special lift-up to Vin for organizing, thanks man.

Thanks Vin and Mike for leading today! Great ride!

I had a great time aside dying 1/2 the time, ok trails since I crave a little more technical and longer downhills like at Ptaps, in all good times and an outstanding group. Thanks Vin.

Sorry for not having much chance to talk and getting to know the people. But it was a great to see lots of people. Special thanks to Vin to organize and sweep.

Let's chat on the next ride. The pace was a bit 'brisk' so I wasn't too chatty. See you on the next one!

Why do i always miss the good ones :(
Patapsco just wasn't the same without the crew.

Great ride, great trails, great riders. 'Twas a good group that held together well. I'll ride with you folks anytime.

    1 · July 27, 2013

  • Steve

I had a blast - learned some new trails - met some new people - life is good.
Not the most technical ride by any stretch, but good rhythm and flow in sections.
The Black Hill Park segment was very nice - just too short.
Looking forward to linking up for other rides

Bike did not make parole from 'bike shop jail' in time for today's ride :-(

    July 27, 2013

    • Michael W

What size bike do you ride? I have a 18.5 inch steel hardtail you can barrow.

      July 27, 2013

  • Peter A

Something came up this morning, can't make it. Sucks! Probably do ptat later today. Sorry guys.

    • Jorge

      Let me know what time

      July 26, 2013

  • Vin L.

Don't worry everyone. This is a "no drop" ride. We stay together and won't do more than anyone is capable of.

    July 26, 2013

  • Michael W

I'm in. Hoyles Mill is my back yard.

    July 26, 2013

    • Peter A

So much for it being an easy and short ride! Try to go easy on the old guys, will ya?

      July 26, 2013

    • fred

Going easy on the "old guys" sounds like a great idea since I'll be 65 sooner thany my 25 yr old mind wants to admit.

      July 26, 2013

  • fred

Hmmm. VZ Navigator finds 14699 Scaeffer when I search for 14799. I'll send up a flare if I get lost.

    July 26, 2013

  • Vin L.

...be fine if we choose it.

    July 26, 2013

  • Vin L.

I know Black Hill as well, so we should

    July 26, 2013

  • Heriberto B.

Whta you can do is take the Hoyles Mill and then do the Black hill, but you need sombody who knos the BH, there are some trail that are great ...long climb much technical that SF. I am going with my frien at 8:00 so if I finish early i will see you at the Parking lot ....

    July 26, 2013

  • Vin L.

I'm going to leave the ride and the rating as is. If all find it too easy, and/or want to do more, we have options to add on mileage.

    July 26, 2013

    • Peter A

Sounds like a plan. Probably kick my butt without adding any more mileage any way. I'm in.

      July 26, 2013

  • Vin L.

For those who might not have done a meetup ride, look for my silver Toyota FJ Cruiser in the parking lot at Schaeffer.

    July 26, 2013

  • Rodrigo S.

Anyone who knows this trail would like to ride it on Sunday? Can't make it on Saturday...

    July 26, 2013

  • Peter A

I agree with Heriberto, gonna be easy and short. If we add a loop (even if just a shorter version) of Schaeffer, why I believe I just may join y'all. What say ye?

    1 · July 26, 2013

  • Heriberto B.

    hey guys.
I thiink Holeys Mill is a little down of level 4-5. I think level 4-5 is more like Patapsco. If you can do Shaeffer farm you can easy do HM. I said this becasue maybe somebody can a little disapointed. I never check the milles but i sorprise that it can be 9. Anyway enjoy it I will be in SF with a friend who is a beginer :) I try to bring more people to thsi amazing sport Bike , I mean bye

    July 26, 2013

  • Vic

Great trail, and not widely known. I'm in!

    July 26, 2013

  • Jose T.

    Who is the event host?

    July 23, 2013

  • Vin L.

I'd encourage you to join the ride. If you ride Fountainhead you're more than ready for this. And I certainly won't be setting the land speed record...

    July 24, 2013

  • fred

Noticed the ride skill level was 3-4, 4-5. I am definitely somewhere in the 3-4 (closer to 3, I think fitness-wise). Don't want to be a drag on the group. Not a problem if you-guys/gals think it should be a no-go for me. I can do Wakefield or Fountainhead and still be happy. I just need to get out. My bike has been at my LBS until today and I reeeeeeeealy need to do some riding.

    I await your reply.

    July 24, 2013

  • Aaron

    Looking fwd to it!

    July 24, 2013

  • Vin L.

My thought was that we would consider as a group whether to ride Black Hill based on how everyone feels at the time. Black Hill is a bit hillier and adds 4-6 miles depending on how much is ridden.

    July 24, 2013

  • Vic

Hey everyone! So are we riding the Black Hill Loop as well? Or just Hoyles Mill? Either way, this is some fast and flowing single track and a little known route.
