Moderate Pace at Patapsco, Daniels/Woodstock Area

  • This location is shown only to members

WHAT: Moderate Ride at the Daniels and Woodstock Areas of Patapsco State Park. These trails don’t see as much use as other areas of Patapsco, and some sections can be a little rougher than the Avalon, Glen Artney and Orange Grove areas that you may be used to. Opinions on whether that’s good or bad will vary, but being an old-school kind of guy, I think that just makes them more fun. There is lots of great single-track here. If you’re getting a little bored of the same trails every weekend, and want to ride some less-traveled but great stuff, please join us. Bring some food and/or drink if you’d like to hang out at picnic tables aprés-ride.

WHERE: Patapsco State Park, Daniels Area, 2092 Daniels Road, Ellicott City, MD 21042

PACE and TERRAIN: When choosing a group ride, these are the two main things to consider. Most ride leaders here have agreed to use the ride classifications from MORE’s website, and I’ll adhere to these guidelines so that you know just what to expect on this and every ride. Complete descriptions may be found at: http://www.more-mtb.org/rides

PACE: MODERATE. Approx. 6 to 8 mph. Good for most average riders, not so much for beginners, mainly due to terrain. This is a no-drop ride, i.e., we wait up for everyone at intersections. (Note: our attitude is laid-back and friendly. If you don’t want to wait up for slower riders, this is NOT the ride for you. It is not a training ride, and Racer X will be disappointed).

TERRAIN: Ranges from EASY to INTERMEDIATE to ADVANCED. Most of the trails are fairly smooth, but there are a few steep climbs, rocks and technical sections, and a stream crossing or two. There is an abandoned road section, as well as a short (0.5 mile) section on an active road. This is a friendly ride, so we will wait up for everyone, just be advised that the terrain can be somewhat difficult in places.

DISTANCE: Approx. 15–16 miles (not sure of exact route yet). At least half of it is down hill (ha-ha!). Approx. 1 mile is an abandoned road, 4 or 5 miles is flat and follows the river, and 0.5 mile is an active road. The rest is sweet flowy single track. Standard ride is a loop, and there are lots of longer options if we feel up to it.

DURATION: Ride time: approx. 2–3 hours; total time: approx. 3–4 hours; depending on group dynamics, trail conditions, wait-ups, mechanicals and/or number of stops. As mentioned, no-drop, which may add to total time. Note: wheels roll at stated time, so please don’t be late.

DIRECTIONS: Meet at Patapsco State Park, Daniels Area, 2092 Daniels Road, Ellicott City, MD 21042

https://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&channel=fflb&q=2090+Daniels+Road,+Ellicott+City,+MD+21042&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x89c818ad9a296dd3:0xab1cb639da635084,2090+Daniels+Rd,+Ellicott+City,+MD+21043&gl=us&ei=h2QOUp3kA5TJ4APit4DoCA&ved=0CCwQ8gEwAA

Take Rt. 29 north all the way until it ends (just past Rt. 70) at Rogers Avenue (Rt. 99). Turn Right onto Rt. 99/Rogers Avenue and travel 0.7 mi to a traffic circle. Take the third circle exit onto Old Frederick Road. In 0.6 mi turn left onto Daniels Road (very easy to miss!). Take Daniels Road to the end (1.1 mi) and park in the gravel lot near picnic tables (across from the dam).

BRING: Helmet (required), water, spare tube/patch kit, multi-tool, I.D., emergency contact info where it can be easily located on your person, and a good attitude, as this ride is as much about camaraderie as it is about riding. This is a 15–16 mi. ride, so make sure you and your steed are well-prepared. There are few, if any, easy bail-outs on this ride.

WEATHER: Shine Only (no ride if it’s raining or the trails are too muddy). Protect our trails and don’t ride them when they’re fragile.

RIDE LEADER: Peter A, 410-9six7-sixsix83; trekfueler at gmail dot com. Note: If you post to this board at the last minute, it will NOT be viewed before the ride. Call/text ride leader if you have any last minute problems/questions.

NOTE: Please read the document “Meetup Ride Waiver” (found under menu: More > Files > Meetup Ride Waiver) before attending this event. Mountain biking is an inherently dangerous sport, and by attending this ride, you acknowledge and have read, agree to and fully understand the aforementioned waiver.

Hope to see you there!

Me and another buddy are going to ride here this Saturday, same place at 9AM. I didn't post anything on meetup because we both don't know the trails well, and we are going to explore it. So if you have something to do in the PM, you may not want to join. We may also go and look for ruins of a church there. We will be doing a moderate pace.

Turns out I can't stay long after the ride, so don't worry about it (unless you guys are staying). I may have a beer after, but it may still be too cold even for that. Brrrrrr.
