Beginners Ride #2 - Lake Accotink (Fire Road Trails)

ANNANDALE, VA -- The sun is coming out this weekend and its time for our first Beginners Ride to get the shine off your new bikes, and the dust off your old ones! Kyle Bondo will be hosting a Beginners Ride - Easy Pace - starting at the first parking lot on your left coming into the Audrey Moore RECenter at Wakefield Park (park in front of the baseball field area). This ride is sponsored by MORE -- No charge -- the first 20 riders are welcome!

Who This Ride Is For...
This is a beginner ride! That means that you should think of yourself as a beginner rider. Terms like "choosing good lines", "log hopping", and "hucking" are foreign to you. Maybe you can ride a mountain bike and have a moderate level of physical fitness, but climbing hills are still tough, your brakes are always on when descending, and a "creek crossing" may mean it's time to get off the bike. If any of these things describe you, then you are most likely a "beginner"!

Who This Ride is Not For...
If you know how to bank a turn, counter steer, accelerate into a corner, or only use your front brakes, this is probably not your ride. This ride will be considered SLOW from your point of view, and unless you would like to ride along to help new riders, this ride will certainly test your patience. There will be other riders for your skill level, but this ride is really for those who are new to the sport. We will welcome those who just want to "learn the trails", but only if you have a smile the whole time and can tell a good joke!

Ride #1 (Technical Trails)
The objective will be to leave the parking lot at 8:10 AM, do one-loop of the Wakefield Mountain Bike Course at a nice, easy pace (approx. 3.1-miles) making frequent stops to pick up stragglers if needed and returning to the parking lot around 9:30 AM-10 AM.

Ride #2 (Fire Road Trails)
The objective will be to leave the parking lot around 10:10 AM, do one-loop of Lake Accotink at a nice, easy pace (approx. 6.0-miles) making frequent stops to pick up stragglers if needed and returning to the parking lot around 11:45 AM - 12 PM.

You are welcome to join both rides (please RSVP separately), or meet us for one or the other. Each loop will bring us back to the parking lot to rest up, send some on their way, and pick up new folks for ride #2. You are always welcome to ride ahead of the group if you feel like going faster than the pace or mix back in when you need to.

For those who would like it, I'll be going over basic hill climbing techniques, obstacle avoidance techniques, and answering any questions you have to get you comfortable riding the trails!

Rules
The main requirements for this ride is that all riders must have a good helmet, have their bike in moderate working order (to check your tires and bring a spare), and bring some water!

NO HELMET - NO RIDE!

Additionally, we now use the waiver system provided by MORE. You will be required to sign the waiver before you can join the ride.

More experienced riders willing to help out are always appreciated, and we look forward to riding with you guys and gals at Wakefield on Saturday!

It looks like my family made plans without considering my MTB addiction again. I will be able to make the 8 am ride, but not this one. :(

Would love to go to this one, too -- but, I will still have my son this weekend.

Same with these trails as Wakefield. If you ever want to ride them with someone, just let me know.

What is the approximate mileage for each of the two rides? I need to know how many Advil to bring.... Thanks.

3-4 miles of single-track for Wakefield, and about 5 miles of fire road for Accotink.

I hadn't considered the trails -- depends how dry it is (they stay wet longer then everything else). However, we could detour into some of the those! ;)

Are we doing the lake loop or are we also going onto some of the side trails for this one?
