Beginner Ride #3 - Laurel Hill Park (Full Trails)

Beginners Ride - Easy Pace
The sun is coming out this weekend and its time for our first Beginners Ride to get the shine off your new bikes, and the dust off your old ones! Kyle Bondo will be hosting a Beginners Ride - Easy Pace - at the Laurel Hill Park MTB tails near the old Lorton Prison (aka Glen Meadows, Giles Run Meadow, Lorton Prison Trails... it has many names). This ride is sponsored by MORE -- No charge -- the first 20 riders are welcome!

Who This Ride Is For...
This is a beginner ride! That means that you should think of yourself as a beginner rider. Terms like "choosing good lines", "log hopping", and "hucking" are foreign to you. Maybe you can ride a mountain bike and have a moderate level of physical fitness, but climbing hills are still tough, your brakes are always on when descending, and a "creek crossing" may mean it's time to get off the bike. If any of these things describe you, then you are most likely a "beginner"!

Who This Ride is Not For...
If you know how to bank a turn, counter steer, accelerate into a corner, or only use your front brakes, this is probably not your ride. This ride will be considered SLOW from your point of view, and unless you would like to ride along to help new riders, this ride will certainly test your patience. There will be other riders for your skill level, but this ride is really for those who are new to the sport. We will welcome those who just want to "learn the trails", but only if you have a smile the whole time and can tell a good joke!

The Ride (Singletrack/CCT Mixed Trails)
The objective will be to leave the parking lot at 8:10 AM, do one-loop of the Laurel Hill MTB Course at a nice, easy pace (approx. 7.0-miles) making frequent stops to pick up stragglers if needed and returning to the parking lot around 9:30 AM-10 AM.

Ride Note: We will ride Slaughter House and The Apple Orchard trails during this ride.

For those are interested or need a refresher, I'll be going over basic hill climbing techniques, obstacle avoidance techniques, and answering any questions you may have in order to get you comfortable riding these trails!

Rules
The main requirements for this ride is that all riders must have a good helmet, have their bike in moderate working order (to check your tires and bring a spare), and bring some water!

NO HELMET - NO RIDE!

Additionally, we now use the waiver system provided by MORE. You will be required to sign the waiver before you can join the ride.

More experienced riders willing to help out are always appreciated, and we look forward to riding with you guys and gals in Lorton, Virginia on Saturday!

Directions: From I-95, take Lorton Rd exit (exit 163), head west at bottom of ramp (a right turn whether coming north or south bound on I-95.) Giles Run Meadow (Laurel Hill) entrance is on the right about 1/2 mile down Lorton Road. Follow the driveway up until you see the prison complex. The parking lot is on the left, next to the playground.

The best way I know to get to Laurel Hill (Glen Meadow or Laurel Meadow)... is to come from the I495... 1. Go to I95 South through Springfield; 2. Go about 3-4 miles until you reach the Lorton Road exit; 3. On the exit, go RIGHT at the light (onto Lorton Road heading West); 4. Go straight through the next light; 5. The road merges and becomes a 2-lane road; 6. Once the Lorton Road becomes 2-lanes, look for the maroonish/red FCPA park sign on RIGHT (complete with park gates) that reads "Giles Run Meadow"; 7. Turn into the park, drive up the driveway to the prison, then turn LEFT into the parking lot!!

Shaf -- I would take Ox Road or Hooes Road south to Furnace Road. Take a LEFT onto Furnace Road and follow it until it merges into Lorton Road. Merge LEFT onto Lorton Road and just after you get over the hill after the merge, you should see the Lorton Prison (Giles Run Meadow) driveway entrance on the LEFT.

Has anyone been recently? I've heard that the ticks can be bad at some times in the year.

Ticks are medium! LOL! Deep Woods OFF works well. Haven't been bite by a tick in 2-years since I started using it (knocking on wood!)

Thanks for the tip. I'll be sure to do a thorough OFF hose down before the ride.

Really looking forward to this ride. I went out to Accotink for my first ride in about three years and it was ugly! Took a couple of bad spills. Excited to get some solid instruction and ride with better bikers.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
