Panel Discussion:

"B Certified Corporations:  New Thinking for a New Kind of Business"

WHAT:    Since 2006, across the country, more than four hundred businesses have become  B Certified Corporations (B Corps for short), a new type of corporation which uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. In DC Metro area alone nearly 30 businesses (ten in Maryland, seven in DC, and ten in Virginia) show their commitments to doing well while doing good by adhering to the recommendations of the B Impact Rating System.

The DC Professional Chapter of Net Impact invites you to meet five of the DC area's B Corps from a variety of fields at a panel on August 29th at Busboys and Poets, and hear first-hand how these businesses are building social and environmental responsibility into the DNA of their companies.

Moderated by  Amy Kincaid, founder and principal of ChangeMatters – not only a B Certified company but also the first Benefit Corporation** founded in the United States – the panelists will discuss their motivations and business strategies for seeking B Corp certification and how their commitment to social or environmental changes manifests in their day-to-day operations.

** A Benefit Corporation, unlike a B Certified corporation, is a new legal designation for businesses, blending the altruism of nonprofits with the business sensibilities of for-profit companies. Maryland was the first state to pass Benefit Corporation legislation in April 2010. Five states currently recognize the designation (Maryland, Hawaii, Vermont, Virginia and New Jersey) and six more have forthcoming legislation (California, Colorado, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Michigan).
