Neighborhood Nightlife: Pentagon City

UPDATE:  The weather will be fantastic tomorrow!  A high of 60 with a low of 50.  It will be nice to ice skate in 50+ degree weather.  For those that didn't notice, a great line-up of drink specials for venue 1 has been added below.  Get there early enough to enjoy!  Don't enjoy too much...skating and drinking don't mix well after a couple of drinks (hence why ice skating is at venue 1).  We have plenty of space now!  We were maxed out just a couple of hours ago and now 11 people have bailed since the day-before auto reminder went out.  See everyone tomorrow!

Hope everyone had a fantastic New Years! We’re back with our first regular outing since mid-November! We’ll be returning to Virginia to check out Pentagon City. Less than a mile from the Potomac River and the District boundary, Pentagon City is known for high rise condos and hotels, TSA and DEA headquarters, the busiest Costco in the country, and of course plenty of shopping. The area was known as ReLee until just after WWII and was almost completely undeveloped. The land was still largely undeveloped until 1977, when the Pentagon City metro station opened. As with many metro stations development around it took off. In 2003 Pentagon City was under consideration for the new home of the Montreal Expos (now known as the Washington Nationals).

For the new year we thought we would mix it up and do something different for our first venue. The Pentagon Row plaza of Pentagon City has an outdoor ice skating rink. We negotiated a discounted rate of $6/each for our group (skate rentals are $3). Just mentioned you are with the Neighborhood Night Life/Pub Crawl group at the counter. We’ll have a table outside the rink to put your things on, and mingle if you want to grab a hot chocolate at the nearby Starbucks. For those that aren’t up for strapping sharpened metal to your feet and moving around on ice we’ll still have a bar set up for us at the neighboring Zen Bistro. Zen Bistro just expanded their bar and provides a chill modern Asian lounge atmosphere. They’ll even provide 20% off both drinks and food to anyone that shows their ice skating receipt. There is an outdoor area for Zen Bistro (and their attached second bar Asia Bistro) so you can drink and watch your fellow pub crawlers slip and slide on the ice. Yes, its winter but we’re hoping for an extension of the 50 degree weather hitting us late next week.  Update: For those that arrive before 9pm there are early bird specials for our group that include $3 domestic beers, $4 Sangria, $4 house wine (Santa Rita Chardonnay or Merlot), and $5 Mojitos.  The specials are only available until 9pm, and can't be combined with the 20% skating discount above.

Our next venue will be Champs Sports bar. Champs is a wall-to-wall sports bar, with plenty of space inside. There will be a football crowd present to watch the NFL NFC Divisional Playoffs at 8pm (the 49er's and Greenbay will be in action).  Unfortunately, a NFL playoff night at a corporate sports bar coupled with Virginia ABC laws makes it a hail-mary to get drink specials for our group. If we pull it off we’ll let you know, but we’ll enjoy the atmosphere nonetheless.

Our final venue will be a Pentagon City staple, Sine Irish Pub and Restaurant. It’s a large Irish bar, visited by many of the locals. We’ll have the back bar reserved for our group. We’ll let you know about drink specials, which will probably be a handful of free shots passed out by the organizers.
Remember, the bars in Virginia close at 2pm so last call will be at 1:40. The metro will be operating for well over an hour after last call. For the cool kids that get the invite…we’re tossing around an afterparty since a couple of our pub crawlers reside in the neighborhood, or visiting the Crystal City Restaurant a mile away…

Metro: Take the Yellow or Blue line to the Pentagon City station. Upon arrival at the Pentagon City station, utilize the underground walkway under S. Hayes Street. Enter the Fashion Center mall and proceed to the food court on the lower level. Walk straight past the food court, which will be on your right-hand side. Walk through the parking garage, up the stairs and cross the street to the area of Pentagon City called Pentagon Row. If you get lost just ask for the ice skating rink!

Reminder: Due to the limited number of RSVP's available, please RSVP only if you plan to come out. If you are a maybe, indicate this in the comments when you RSVP yes (it’s a mystery why Meetup removed the option to allow maybe rsvp’s). Three days before the outing, all maybe’s will be moved to a no. Keep in mind that consistent no-shows are subject to removal from the group. All of our events max out so no-shows take a spot from someone else. Also, while we love meeting new faces, everyone is strongly encouraged to RSVP through the web site or be a guest of a member. The cover is almost always waived for our group and the first thing most venues want is our RSVP list. Please remember to get to the first venue early enough to mingle, and certainly early enough to join us as we move on to the second venue. If you can’t make it, PLEASE modify your RSVP.

Disclaimer: Keep in mind your organizers reserve the right to omit, change, or substitute venues as seen fit depending on the group dynamics, scheduling, and available space. The pubcrawl officially ends at 12:00am but we’re sure most of us will be out well past that. Yes, it's perfectly fine if you choose to get intoxicated, drunk, blitzed, plastered, wasted, toasted, smashed, or pissed. However, make sure you have a friend present to take on any applicable baby-sitting duties.

How many are actually ice skating or just going to the bar?

    January 6, 2013

    • Jeremy

Not sure...I'm sure there won't be more than 20 ice skating is my best guess. The bar is next to the rink so people will be going back and forth it. See you Amy B!

Organizer Greg will be treating us to his figure skating, errr hockey skating skills. He use to be a hockey coach in his home area of southern California.
