Announcing a new Meetup for DC Neighborhood Pub Crawl!
What: Neighborhood Pub Crawl: Chinatown!
When: August 30,[masked]:00 PM
Where: Click the link below to find out!
Meetup Description: Chinatown. No longer just your point of thrifty demarcation to New York via death buses. In a short period of time Chinatown has converted itself from a place of ill repute to a thriving mini-cosmopolitan area. Spurred by the construction of a new convention center, the Verizon Center (MCI Center at the time of construction) and a 200 million dollar upgrade in 2006, Chinatown is now a destination of sorts. The crime of the past is being replaced with new restaurants and some good spots for nightlife. Ironically I?m typing this in Chinatown in what was 10 months ago an Asian Massage parlor. Fear not the place was thourouley hosed down before it was renovated, or so I?m told.
The heart of Chinatown is located at the intersection of Hst and 7th St NW. It should be noted that Chinatown was originally settled by German immigrants. The Chinese followed the Germans in the 1930s after being displaced from the development site of the Federal Triangle project in the Pennsylvania Ave Corridor. The riots of 1968 were followed by a period of high crime and high taxes. As a result much of the population re-settled in the suburbs never to return.
We will be starting our Journey just down the block from the Metro. Take your time on the walk from the Metro to the first spot and note the Chinese lettering on the building facades. Much of this lettering had to pass the stringent approval of one of our very own pub crawlers. If you have never met Hsiaoying please take the time to thank her for a job well done.
The first spot was chosen as it has a fun spirit and is owned and operated by a good friend who was willing to accommodate by giving us our own area. If you have been there before you might have noted that it gets quite crowded. However, as the first spot and being 8pm on a Saturday we should have plenty of room and, my favorite, access to the juke box.
Our second stop will be to visit the interior courtyard bar of the Hotel Monaco known as Poste. It is a pretty nice spot with an interesting sudo-exterior courtyard. For a highly rated restaurant/bar the beverage prices are well within reason. If you are not familiar with the Hotel Monaco perhaps you have noticed a building across the street from the Portrait Gallery. They are both designed in a similar style.
The third stop will be Ultra Bar. Ultra Bar is a multi level club with music for all tastes. http://www.ultrabardc.com/
I've arranged for our members to have a discounted entrance and to skip the line. That said it is imperative you RSVP and our on the list that Jeremy and I will bring. We only have space for the set RSVP limit. This means that there can be no crashers. Also, there is a dress code so be sure you are covered. Please send Jeremy or I a note if you need more then plus 5 on your RSVP.
Cool, well I for one am looking forward to continuing where we left off at the Dupont Crawl. See you all soon!
OH, I'll open the RSVPs in a couple days.
