MD WW Waterfall Road Trip

  • May 18, 2013 · 10:00 AM

Folks,

This meetup is for all you nature lovers of waterfalls. Please see below:

Canaan Valley is an oval, bowl-like upland valley in northeastern Tucker County, West Virginia, USA. Within it are extensive wetlands and the headwaters of the Blackwater River which spills out of the valley at Blackwater Falls. It is a well-known and partially undeveloped scenic attraction and tourist draw, associated with the Canaan Valley Resort State Park and the Blackwater Falls State Park.
Canaan Valley was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1974.[1] The National Park Service citation indicates that the Valley is "a splendid 'museum' of Pleistocene habitats ... contain[ing] ... an aggregation of these habitats seldom found in the eastern United States. It is unique as a northern boreal relict community at this latitude by virtue of its size, elevation and diversity." Since 1994, almost 70% of the Valley has become the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, the nation's 500th National Wildlife
Blackwater Falls State Park is named for the falls of the Blackwater River whose amber-colored waters plunge five stories then twist and tumble through an eight-mile long gorge. The "black" water is a result of tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. The falls are one of the most photographed sites in West Virginia. Blackwater lodge, cabins and restaurant are open year-round and welcome visitors to enjoy winter sled riding, spring greening, cool summer evenings, and autumn foliage. Our conference facilities host reunions, meetings and special occasions as well as catered banquets and receptions. The indoor guest pool and fitness center is popular with our guests. The Elakala Falls are a series of four waterfalls of Shays Run[2] as it descends into the Blackwater Canyon in West Virginia. They are within Blackwater Falls State Park[3] and are quite popular among photographers, with the ease of access for the first waterfall, and the relatively low traffic of the other waterfalls in the series.[
Swallow Falls State Park has re-opened after the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy with limited access to the falls. Not all areas of the park or the trails are accessible as storm cleanup efforts continue. For your safety, please adhere to signs indicating what areas are open and do not go beyond posted signs.
This mountain park is located nine miles north of Oakland, Maryland and contains some of Maryland's most breathtaking scenery. The Youghiogheny River flows along the park's borders, passing through shaded rocky gorges and creating rippling rapids. Muddy Creek Falls is a crashing 53-foot waterfall – a spectacular sight. Tall hemlocks dominate the silent woods. The meandering trails through Swallow Falls guide hikers to some of the most breath-taking scenery in Western Maryland.
The Youghiogheny River and Muddy Creek are white water rivers that contain severe natural hazards, such as waterfalls, violent rapids, swift currents, deep pools, underwater hydraulics, cold water, slippery rocks and rough terrain. Injuries and deaths have occurred in and around these waters.

Did we still want to upload our pics here, or we going to wait for our meeting to do a show/tell ??

Glad to meet the people that showed up. I think we would have had a better turn out and not losing people had we stuck with 1 Falls. Me personally, I enjoyed SwallowFalls better then Blackwater. I would make a suggestion, and that we actually meet some place that's easier to find. I went to the given address for the Lodge (after much driving around and asking directions), but if it weren't for John texting me I would have never found anybody because they all met at the Nature's Visitor Center. If you state an address, uumm that's where you need to meet. John and I discussed about coming back to SwallowFalls for an afternoon. Would love to give those that missed this trip that opportunity.

For any and all, I will be meeting up at the rest area right before the Mannassas exit at 5:30am. I will be at the far end of that parking lot (just before you re-enter the highway), if anyone wants to meet there and convoy to the park. I plan on taking Hwy 66 west to Hwy 81 south and turning off onto Rt. 55. 55 will take us 98% of the way. Them its Rt 32 and we are there.
I did change cars, I will now be in a blue Subaru - same cell #[masked]

I google mapped the location and see a Canaan Valley Resort and Conf. center. Unless there is an actual meeting spot that I am missing in this thread, why don't we pick a section of the parking area to meet at. I will be driving a silver mitsubishi eclipse. My cell will be on - reception questionable @[masked]-5444. Looking forward to meeting you all and getting some great waterfall images. :)

      Hi John,
I will attend college graduation on Sunday, May 19th, 2013. I will leave Vienna around 7:00pm on Saturday. If the Waterfall Road Trip takes 4 hours, I do not think I can make it.
Dan, posted a message, he lives at West Springfield, I think your guys can drive one car.
So bad I can not make this time.
      Have fun.
      Thanks

Michael.. is there a particular place at the destination to meet in the parking lot so we know who to look for (or a particular car?)?

    May 15, 2013

  • Dan G.

I'll be leaving from West Springfield, heading down 7100 or what ever they call it now, to 66W. If there is anybody in that area that needs or wants a ride I have room. e-mail me at [masked] to work out the details. I've contacted John below to see about following him up so we have at least a few cars going to the right place. (I make a terriable passenger btw LOL). Google maps says about 3:45 from my house. I also want to make sure there is time for breakfast.

I live in Falls Church and will be driving over to the valley. If you could give me an address where we will meet (and time) I'll plug it into my GPS. As of now I have room for one other in my car with possibility of two more - I'll know soon. If you live in or west of FC I'd be happy to carpool.

    • Irene V.

Are we talking, on average ... 2? 3? Miles per park?

      May 2, 2013

    • Michael P.

Irene, I was thinking of no more than a mile per park. Some waterfalls are really close.

      May 3, 2013

You are all most welcome to book a hotel for this 1 day trip. www.hotels.com has good deals. You are responsible for your own booking.

I've photographers Blackwater Falls & some of the other features mentioned. They are truly wonderful & well worth the trip. However, I'm running a 3 day nude workshop in MD that weekend, so I'll have to miss this. Hope I can do it next time.

Sorry to miss this - will be traveling that day.
