Florida Keys Dive Week!

  • March 15 · 7:00 AM
  • Dive Capital of the World!

Let's go diving!  Planning for Florida Keys Dive Week is complete!  We have a great group and will have a great time!

Our seventh annual diving trip to the Florida Keys happens the week of March 15 - 22. And again this year, we will be offering diving and/or instruction to anyone who would like to come along!

For those of you who have taken the basic course, but still need your open water qualification dives, this would be a great time to get them done in warm, clear water before the summer diving season starts.

“Advanced Adventure” certification will also be available- an excellent opportunity to see the famous deeper wrecks, including the Eagle, the USCGC Duane, the USNS Vandenberg and the USS Spiegel Grove, to experience the wonder of a night dive, and to learn additional advanced diving techniques. NITROX certification can be earned as well, to double your bottom time.

BUT PLEASE NOTE: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE A COURSE TO COME DIVING WITH US IN KEY LARGO! Just RSVP here, let CAPT Steve know when you're coming, show up in Key Largo anytime between March 15-22, and you can come diving with us. You just have to pay the dive boats for the dive charter(s) and any equipment you may need.

The average water temperature in Key Largo in March is 75+ degrees. Dive site depths range from 15’ to 110’ and the visibility can range from 30’ to 100+’. Most dive sites are only a short boat ride away from the dock. So not only would you be enjoying a great holiday in the Florida sun, you could be completing your certifications with your original instructor - and not have to go through any referral process, or advancing your diving skills.

American Airlines flys directly from Reagan National Airport (DCA) and Baltimore-Washington (BWI) to Miami International (MIA) many times daily.  It is generally best to book at http://aa.com, but you can also book through American Express (particularly if you have points), Travelocity or other travel sites.  Key Largo is only 60 minutes from the airport. There are many rental car outfits at MIA. You can also fly into Fort Lauderdale (FLL) which is cheaper, but farther from the Keys (two hours vs one hour).

We will be staying at the Key West Inn in Key Largo, and have negotiated DEEP discounts for our rooms. http://www.supertelinns.com/reservations/KeyLargo
BUT, DON'T BOOK THROUGH THEIR WEBSITE! TO GET THE SPECIAL RATE, WE HAVE TO BOOK YOUR ROOM!

Special hotel features and amenities include:

◦Two level townhouse suite
◦Master bedroom with Queen size bed upstairs
◦Living room with sofa sleeper downstairs
◦Fully equipped kitchen
◦Two full baths (one upstairs and one downstairs)
◦Balcony with views of marina
◦Two 27-inch TVs

Hello All: Really enjoyed the dive trip! As discussed while down in KL, I'm planning on going wreck diving in North Carolina 26-31 July. If you're an *experienced* diver who wants to come along, I'd love to have company. We can coordinate carpools, roomshare, that sort of thing, and it's always nice to have people to tell dive stories with! email me at: ken -at- blakelys -dot- us

Where is everyone meeting up on Saturday morning? It's an 1 - 1/2 hour drive for me so I'll have to get an early start - what type of dive and can I rent stuff - didn't bring my gear with me.

    March 14

    • CAPT Steve

Saturday is our travel day and people will be arriving at various times throught the day and evening. Diving begins Sunday afternoon. We would love to have you dive with us, but you MUST call us at [masked] to discuss.

    • CAPT Steve

This is very important because there are questions we need to ask you and answering your questions is much easier on the phone than here.

I'm going to do a morning dive, but I do have a rental car and could come down after I clean up and meet you sometime after your appointment? When do a.m. dives end and how long is the drive down to Key West?

Also, I think you meant Sunday a.m. for where everyone is meeting up. We're not doing an a.m. dive so I don't think you'll have to get up early. Hurrah!

    March 14

    • CAPT Steve

The dive boats normally get back from the morning dives between noon and 12:30 depending on how far away the dive site is. It is 100 miles from Key Largo to Key West of Overseas Highway, which in some areas has low speed limits and traffic lights. You should allow at least two hours.

I can rearrange my schedule on Wednesday except for a doctor's appointment I have at 1:00 - works out since I would not be able to dive that day due to the appointment - Will one of you have a rental car? If so you can either drive out in the morning - we can go to KW and I can leave you all to explore - go to my appointment and then meet up - there are also some great local restaurants around here - not Key West but South of Marathon - we could have a course at each one - one has amazing mussels - another a lobster Ruben, and the third a must place to visit with the best fired Grouper ever - No Name Pub - the entire restaurant has $1.00 bills covering every wall and empty flat space in the restaurant - It's a Keys MUST VISIT!

I'm living on Sugarloaf Key until April 1 and so would love to meet up with you for a dive or two - How can I go about coordinating with you all - I'm about an hour South in Key West - been here since December 1 - and hey - I'll give anyone who wants a tour of Key West!

      Please call me at [masked].
We are coming down to Key West on Thursday to dive the Vandenberg.

      March 14

    • Laurie

Carol, I'd LOVE a tour of key west. I can't dive Wed afternoon before my flight on Thursday, if you're free! Maybe Kelly would be interested too, since she's flying back Thurs?

      March 14

  • Carol Drury

PS - I also have two spare bedrooms if someone is looking for a really cheap place to stay and the drive isn't all that bad between Sugarloaf and Key Largo - plus if anyone wants to drive out to Key West, you're more than welcome to stay over with me!

Hi All: I will be arriving FLL (Ft Lauderdale) at 7:50PM on 15MAR, picking up a car and heading south for Key Largo, prolly arriving KL ~10ish. If anyone is coming in FLL and needs a ride, happy to wait a bit.

I'm departing KL not later than 3PM on 22 Mar to get back to FLL to fly out. If anyone needs a ride, happy to supply.

Also have a room at the hotel; already sharing with one guy, but the place can fit three without any drama. If anyone wants to join and split expenses, email me at ken -at- blakelys -dot- us

While in Key Largo, I HIGHLY recommend visiting "Dolphins Plus". It started as a small venture in the 80's where you could swim with dolphins in an open Lagoon. They do have a partial cage, but, they ARE free to leave if desirable. Now, they have a big setup, and you can choose what type of interaction you would like. I still swim with the free dolphins there. It's totally bitchen to have them swimming next to you (by choice). You hear all of the clicks, and you can actually feel the sonar. It totally ROCKS! The price, if I remember, is around $220 for 2 periods of swim time. The money goes to many things including interactive experiences for kids/adults that have autism, down syndrome, and learning challenges. Oh, look, here is the website:

    http://www.dolphinsplus.com/

Have fun for ME! Or maybe I will come to my senses and join you!

    Be well, Jen

Hello All: I've just booked flights, and I have a car and a room. I'm arriving FLL (Ft Lauderdale) at 7:44PM on 15March and departing FLL at 6:30PM on 22 March. Got those flights (nonstop on United from/to Dulles) from CheapoAir.com for $294 all-in. I have a car and can carry at least one, prolly two people+bags to Key Largo&back; happy to wait a bit if you need me to.

I also have reservations at the hotel at the military rate of about $170/night all-in. That's inclusive of all taxes. These rooms are big - there's a bedroom upstairs and a sofa bed downstairs - they can easily sleep two people, and four isn't really that big of a challenge either. If anyone wants to share, I'm game. email me at ken -at- blakelys -dot- us

Capt Steve: if you can get me a better rate at the hotel, I'd appreciate the help....

Hi- If you're not squeamish about mixed-gender accommodations you'd be welcome to split with Ken and myself. We can draw lots for who gets the bed, the sofa. and who ends up on the floor :) Also more than willing to carpool to / from Miami if you need a life one direction or the other. I am provisionally planning to attend. Assuming I do go- and I will know within a few days- I'd be interested in splitting car rental and / or accommodations if there's anyone out there in a similar position.

What are the planned dive sites - will you hit the Speigel Grove and Dwane. Also, is any planning to dive mix with deco?

    October 8

    • CAPT Steve

The first two days will be shallower reef dives, for rusty diver tune up and open water qualification dives for new divers, usually Molasses Reef, the winch hole and such. We'll move into deeper dives with the Eagle, at least one (and hopefully two or more) dives on the Duane, and possibly the Speigel Grove. We usually take a day trip to Key West to look at the USCGC Ingham (an identical sister to the Duane) and to dive the Vandenberg. There will also be at least one night dive. All deeper dives will have the option of NITROX (if certified), usually 32 due to depth. None of my guys do planned deco, but the boats will allow it if you are properly certified and equipped (particularly if we do a "Double dip" on the Duane, which I will do my best to set up.

I'm very interested in this trip! Could someone please give an estimate of the costs (boat, rental equipment, etc.)? Would anyone be willing to share the amount of money they spent last year on this trip, for example? I need to know how much to save up!

    1 · September 24

    • Ken

I've been diving in Key Largo (this past Feb) and i stayed at that very hotel. Nice place, plenty of parking, very conveniently located, dive shops a short walk away. Not a lotta nightlife on Key Largo, but it's fabulous, warm and uncrowded in March!

      October 1

    • CAPT Steve

The going rate in the Keys for a two tank dive is $80 with tanks and weights. We usually use Conch Republic Divers (for many reasons) in Key Largo and Lost Reef Adventures in Key West. Flights and rental car are up to you, but I would book soon!

      October 9

  • Christine

How much is the hotel? Are there any singles interested in sharing a room?

    September 30

    • Christine

Cool! You planning on going to the happy hour tomorrow? I wanted to get more info on the trip.

      September 30

    • CAPT Steve

The hotels "Best Available Rate" for this week is $149 Sunday - Thursday and $169 Friday and Saturday (see their website). Last year we negotiated down to $129 for the seven nights and expect it to be about the same this year. We will post the rate when we have it. Note that this is per room, NOT per person. You are welcome to double up.
