Dogwood Classic 9 - Scooter Camping Rally

Our Friends down in Richmond, the Seven Hills Scooter club are hosting this annual camping Rally in Standardsville VA.

Last Year we rode down Friday morning and set up camp for 3 Days and Two nights.  Huge Fire, cooking out, Day ride through the country, games and fun.  For those of us who attended Indian Summer, you know what a good show Seven Hills puts on.

Here are the details from Seven Hills.

"Please join us for a most epic scooter camping rally in the beautiful foothills of Virginia! Camping, group rides, good food, live bands, beer bungie... what more could you want?! We're still in the planning stages and have more details to work out before we determin the raly feen of this but want to get the word out a.s.a.p. so you can mark it on your calendars. More details to follow!"

For those up for it, Ill be planning a route down and back, easy ride.  If you cannot make the ride on Friday, its a easy ride down Saturday morning for a one night stay.  Another great Rally, usually about 40-50 riders for this event down there.

what a great weekend! Kevin once again did an awesome job of leading the group via the Shenandoah Valley. The 7 Hills Club are an amazing group of people, so much good conversation, laughs and shenanigans!

I had a great time not camping. :-) About 50 attended, I think 10 of us affiliated with Spin Doctors. I loved the three rides over the Blue Ridge and the distillery tour. Linda and I enjoyed the night time conversations around the huge bonfire.

Sadly, I'll have to bail on this amazing event. Sorry guys!

Yeah, I expect the ride out of the city on 66 will not be a problem that time of day, if we keep a tight group, its a quick ride to route 29 and we can have more time to enjoy the backroads :-)

I am really excited too! This is gonna be a blast! I am all about the backroads and your picks are always great!

Nice route KJ! I'm all for skipping the suburbs and taking 66. As long as there are a few of us and we stay tight and visible it should be no problem.

I am going to "just in case" plot a couple bail out routes and post them here, you guys know as well as I do, a 140+ mile ride can and has turned into a 8 hour adventure depending on the roads ;-) So If they day runs long and we get to the point of (hey lets just get there) Ill have some backups ready, still good roads, but more direct ;-) I am getting very excited for this rally, I am really motivated so many people going this year, last year it was just me and Kevin Austing that rode down!

Seven Hills Just sent out a Message that Saturday night dinner and Sunday breakfast are included in registration. So when we get into town on Friday, we can setup our tens then scooter into town for food and stuff to keep in our tents :-)

Hey Julie.... last year they had chairs and the fire pit has benches around it, I would not concern yourself too much. We have a long ride there on some very windy mountain roads, do not burden down your scoot too much... If you find a way to get it on and its not overwhelming, take it, if its a pain, you shoudl be able to be fine without it :-)

Julie, I have a little folding chair that I got in CVS. It is for children but fits perfectly on my scooter rack. Matt paid only $2 for it and gave it to me. I am planning on taking it.

Just saw them post on FB- they will have a slip and slide (HAHA) soo bring your bathing suits of course!

Awesome Kev! Thanks for setting it up. Looking forward to heading out on Friday- what a great start to the weekend. any ideas on how people get their fold up chairs on the scooters? errrr. we have the ones that are slim like an umbrella but they are so damn long and had trouble taking them to Rosslynn one time for an outdoor movie. Hmmm..

This looks like a great ride, Kevin.

ok, I expect 6 hours for thie ride, we leave at 11am, get there 5-6pm. Set up tents, run into town, enjoy the night around the camp fire.

I think the cost and appeal of Skyline are best left for a day in which they are the main point, rather than as a means to elsewhere. Your route is scenic, as would be Route 15 into Orange and then 230 west.

    1 · April 23, 2012

  • KMJ187

We could take skyline drive, but its $10 per bike to get on?

    April 23, 2012

  • KMJ187

Seven Hills will take care of dinner and breakfast stuff... but last time I hit the grocery store in town after I set up my tent to get some drinks and snacks... just bring a tent and stuff, good to go.

    April 23, 2012

Route looks pretty good, thanks for planning. Do we need to bring anything other than tent and sleeping gear? Will Seven Hills provide all the food, cooking materials, etc?

http://rideplanner.harley-davidson.com/rideplanner/road.jsp?roadId=469200&locale=en_US Tentative route??? Just need some tweaks, now we could skip going over the mountain and just take skyline drive? I need to find abetter way of getting out of the city vs. 66, but just taking 29 or 50 takes forever. A route like this could take about 5-6 hours to get there?

I am working on a route now, we will go west for a while and then drop south, I want to make sure we are headed south before 3pm though, so Ill get a good route set up :-) this is going to be a fun weekend!!!!!!!!!!

Kevin, an 11am start sounds good to me. Since I work only a few blocks from there, I can pretend I'm working from 8 am 'til almost 11...

Also, let's make this a really nice ride. We trust you so we will follow whatever you say. The place is very close by so we will have plenty of time to scoot around. Most people will probably arrive in the evening anyways!!!!

Yes Kevin. Let's do that. Let's do Northside Social. At 10am, the outside sitting will be empty so we can take over. Here is the link to their website:

So I am thinking a 10am Meetup on Friday the 11th. Meet someplace for coffee and breakfast, relax, maybe around 11am hit the road. Now if we just blast out Route 66 to Route 29, its about a 2.5 hour ride and we will get there early?

We can head south, then west, tweak the ride, make a few hour ride out of it? Get there still before most, get our tents set up, ride into town for odds and ends? Ill put some thought into it? This is a fun Rally!

Don the Cabooses are NICE!!!!!!!!!!! If anyone needs a tent or sleeping bag, I have an extra, but its a big larger, I have my one person scooter friendly tent for myself. Its a great time out, excellent and very budget friendly Rally. I cant say enough good things for the Seven Hills scooter club group!!!

    April 4, 2012

I KNOW it will be a great time. The campground has several accommodation options, not just sleeping on the ground. Linda and I have reserved a caboose!
