This ride will be 2000 miles that needs to be completed in 48 hours or less. You will need to document times, mileage, location and stops. More info here http://www.ironbutt.c...
The route will take us South West through 7 states (Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina and North Carolina) as you can see here http://tinyurl.com/36...
If anyone wants to try this please make sure you are capable of finishing the 2,000 ride with everyone as a group. This is not a ride to take lightly, it will be exhausting. It would suck to have someone hold everyone back from finishing the ride on time if they are not able to physically finish it and it would also suck to leave anyone behind that just can't go on.
We are planning on going between 125-150 miles between gas stops also so make sure your bike can handle that mileage between stops.
Lee will have the paperwork to sign off witness, mileage, times, locations etc. at the McDonalds starting point that morning for all that have RSVPd "YES" on here.
If anyone is planning on attending and hasn't RSVPd "YES" for the ride on here then you will need to download and print your own witness and ride sheet that you can find here http://www.ironbutt.c...
Anyone knowing of someone else going but haven't RSVPd on here please let them know to print their own sheets or alternatively you can RSVP for them as putting them down as guests under your name so Lee can know how many sheets to print and have witnessed.
Remember, you may finish the ride but unless you have proper documentation for the IBA they will not certify you.
I printed off 12 sets of paperwork, so it would appear that we have more than enough. Now, if I just don't die of excitement in anticipation between now and then I?ll be all right. I am heading to Charleston, SC tomorrow morning. Anybody want me to say ?hello? to any old girlfriends?
Changed the map in the link above to reflect the correct starting point at McDonalds, starting out via 664, change map check points to highway checkpoints instead of cities (since we aren't actually going to the cities), loop around Mobile Alabama and Atlanta Georgia.
Also the checkpoint "F" on the map is our resting stop where we will stop for sleep. It is at the 1,134 miles mark so we will be a little over halfway through with the ride. Hopefully we will have enough time for 6 hours sleep. I am thinking we should get there around 2 or 3 am. If so we will get up and hit the road again at 9am and do the remaining 900 miles or so.
So you guys that have done this before think it's better to have only one stop rather than two? 2000K
I guess it's just my novice (endurance rides) thinking that two 'refreshers' would keep us fresher. But I am good with the current plan!
This is going to be AWESOME regardless!!!
Although none of us have done a SS2K, I don't see the necessity for 2 stops. A 1000 mile IBA ride can easily be done well within 24 hours without stopping. Having 2 stops w/in the 48hr period, I think, would actually cut down the amount of "good" rest. I would rather 1 stop with 5-6 hours sleep vice 2 stops with 2-3 hours sleep each. And also keep in mind that's not FULL sleep time. You must also factor in getting stuff set up, broken down, repack, etc.
When you say "set up and tear down" are you talking about a tent? Just want to make sure I have the proper gear for this adventure.
Set up and tear down? All I am carrying is a blanket and pillow like last time. I am not bringing a tent or anything
No. No tents. But it does take a few minutes to break out the sleeping bag (and in Terry's case the inflatable Oprah), make sure the bike is good to go, etc.
I have a feeling the tent Cale was talking about was in his jeans. He mentioned before when he slept near other guys he would pop a tent and then break it out. Be careful where you sleep...
Yes. One stop. And I would suggest NOT doing a camping thing. a hot shower and warm bed go a lot further than no shower and a hard floor. I'm all about camping and roughing it any other time. But when it comes to this style of ride and the safety aspect. Spend the money for good rest. We'll still have another 15-16 hours ahead of us in the morning.
Michael, you do realize we're stopping at a Welcome Center (i.e. rest stop) and will be crashing in sleeping bags or whatever you bring on the ground right!? There is no intention of staying at a hotel.
Hotel? Man if I stayed in a hotel for this thing, I'd never finish it. I know how I felt during the 1500 after the break. The only thing that kept me going was knowing the only way "out" was to go "forward".
I am down either way. Hotel preferred. Guess I need to find a sleeping bag.
A hotel would be nice if someone wants to pay for it, otherwise my cheap ass will be on the ground. :)
nope. didn't realize that. 0130 is going to be cold. But if that's what the group is doing.
It's the (roughly) Mobile, AL area we'll be stopping. The lows are in the low 70s. Bring long johns if you need.
According to www.weather.com in Mobile Alabama Saturday is supposed to be a low of 72 and a high of 84 with a 20% chance of rain. Sounds decent to me.
What? Long johns? I thought we had agreeed that this was the ride where all we wore were our helmets, boots and assless chaps. Damn! Now I have to rethink my loadout. Well, at least I don't have to bring as much suntan lotion.
Not to worry guys... there is plenty room in the trailers. We're all pulling trailers aren't we? I've already got mine packed with beer, cappuccino machine, air mattress, and spare tires, and 50gallons of gas... LOL
I don't even have a sleeping bag. I was thinking about a blanket but I'll go check out Wal Mart tomorrow night and see if I can fit a sleeping bag on my bike
Thanks Lee!!! I just threw up my lunch!
I picked up a sleeping bag today from Target. This ride will be easy since we are towing all the bikes behind the RV I rented! This trip is actually a 48 hour party, not a ride.
Sumbitch! I've been planning this ride all wrong. If it's truly a party, why are some of you bringing sleeping bags?
Ok, if the trailer doesn't have Direct TV then I am just going to have to ride the motorcycle. A guy has to have his standards.
I just wanted to take a moment here to bid all you Saddlesore 2000 riders some good luck. I'm looking forward to hearing about your adventures when you return safely and successfully. Good Luck and be safe fellow riders.
Thanks Tom I appreciate the good wishes and we will need it. I'm sure we will have some stories to tell after this one.
This is TOMORROW?????
Ohmygawd.. my vespa is still in the SHOP!!!!
I'll have to take my other bike.
Yes... I am bringing a WATERPROOF camera.
Battery is all charged up so we can document this insanity!!!
Thunderstorms and all! Bring it on!
I have a camera ready to go! Shit! We leave in about 8 hours! Cale? You a maybe? Come on man.
Looking too nasty just enough to make this ride look like work. Sorry all.
8 people started, 4 definitely made it back in time (Mike Taylor, Lee, Paul, Terry). Not sure if Michael and William (Q's friend) made it back in time.
Congratulations to the newest IBA members Mike Taylor and Paul Ostrowski! Even though it isn't official yet we know you did it and welcome to the group of crazy ass riders! You should be proud to accomplish a saddlesore 1000, bun burner 1500 and saddlesore 2000 all in one and especially for your very first IBA attempt.
Congrats all! Guess I turned out to be the fool on this one. So how soon can we start discussing a 50CC??
Umm 5 years from now when I get the feeling back in my right hand fingers would be a good time to discuss that Cale.
Congrats to all! I will half to try some other time and I will not have the same issues!
It's ok Charlie, there's always next time... but don't look for me to do this one again. Once is enough ;)
Here is a corrected map to show the actual route we went on. The changes include the different 285 exit we hit near Atlanta and we didn't take 85N business by Greensboro. Not really a big difference but just wanted it to be accurate. http://tinyurl.com/2frn5xw![]()
OK, so do the math for us......What was the total mileage and time? I'm curious to know how much time you still had available upon return.
With numb finger tips i type:
We left at 7AM and returned at 4AM... 3 hours to spare!
Mileage was 2055!!! Ohmygawd that was an adventure!
Thanks for leading us the whole way Lee, you did an outstanding job. It was a real pleasure riding with all you guys. It took some real balls to attempt this ride and I am proud to have been a part of it with you all.
I had a blast riding with ya'll too. Thanks for a wonderful, albiet, butt numbing event. I talked to Cale the other day and he is dissapointed that he did not go go but happy too as he had a lot of things to complete before moving to San Diego on 1 Jun.
Blessings to you CALE!
Wish we could have ridden the SS2000 with ya!
Have a great time in Southern California.
BTW.. it DOES rain there - I used to live in Coronado!!!!
=)
I have to say I don't envy Cale having to live in California, the land of fruits and nuts...
I am still MAD at myself! I am glad you did this successfully!

Paul, as soon as all 8 riders plus Q's friend show up then as far as I'm concerned we can haul more ass than Rosie Odonnell... well almost as much ass anyways. As long as everyone shows up ready to go at 6 am I don't see why we couldn't be on the road by 6:30am.
