  • Apr 21, 2013 · 3:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

PLEASE NOTE: this event will be held outdoors at a new location (weather permitting). In the event of an inclement weather, we will meet at the usual venue (Sony Public Atrium 1st Floor, located at 550 Madison Ave).

Hi everyone, both newcomers and experienced debaters are welcome to join. There will be a sign displayed on the table so you can find us.

The typical meeting is structured as follows:

  • Introductions
  • Overview of debate format
  • Break into two teams
  • Team brainstorming
  • Initial arguments and introduction of topic from each team
  • Each team makes a point or counters the other team's point
  • Conclusion from each team

After the debate, there will be time for feedback. Also, join us for drinks and conversations at the Southwest Porch, which next to the Fountain.

Be sure to join us on Facebook:

Wish someone could have answered my question. Can't rearrange my schedule without knowing the time when the debate ends. Sunday's I'm unable to stay past 5:00.

Sorry for not getting back to you earlier. We tend to go go past 5, but you can feel free to leave earlier. by 5, we finish one round, so you would surely have time to debate. If you plan to leave early, you can always let us know and we can arrange to have you speak early. By the way, we tend to continue teh debating for as long as people like, but we tend to end at around 6PM and then go out for drinks or food. Hope this suits you.

Hi Jon, Thanks for letting me know. I'll make the debate this Saturday when I can stay for the whole thing, and get a feel for it. Maybe I'll be able to make some of the subsequent Sundays, but it sounds like I might be missing too much and Sundays are actually a bit difficult for me to make at all.

Hey debaters! I had a great time with all of you!
By the way, the early May NYC Debate Meetup I had said I was planning has been finalized. We will meet on SATURDAY the 4th of May back in the Sony building public Atrium on the 55th Street side (Madison Avenue). We will meet INSIDE the atrium. Check out the details I just posted.

Please note that this time, it will be on SATURDAY the 4th of May. Am out-of-state in a place with odd net coverage, (I keep getting logged out of Meetup!) so I may not be good at responding to questions, but I will try. The usual May NYC Debate Meetup is STILL scheduled for Sunday the 19th, of course.
Hope to see you guys soon! Cheers!

I'm going to have to leave just before 5:00. Will that leave me enough time to take part in the debate?

    Possible topics for this Sunday:

    - Should the Fed. minimum wage be abolished?
    - Charter schools: a sensible alternative to public schools?
    - Should the U.S. intervene in Syria?
    - Is torture justified under a "ticking time-bomb" scenario?
