Hi Everyone, Both newcomers and experienced debaters are welcome to join. We meet at a table in the Sony Public Atrium on Madison between 55th & 56th St. We'll have a sign displayed on the table so you can find us. Here's what you can expect: * We'll start out with introductions so we can learn a little about each other * A little ice breaking * Overview of how to debate * Overview of Topic * Choosing Debate format (team, free debate, round robin, etc) * Choosing sides (I encourage you to choose a side that you don't believe in to make it more fun, but your choice!) * Debate starts! - Each person speaks for a few minutes introducing their ideas and countering their rivals * Round 2 – We choose what to do next, either a debate new topic, or we swap sides to debate the same topic from the opposite point of view * Final Discussion - we'll talk about what we liked and didn't like in the debate, and have a chance to say anything we didn't bring up at the time, and have a general chat

It was a really interesting and enjoyable afternoon. Thank you Jeremy for hosting. I enjoyed meeting people from different backgrounds and a variety of debating experiences, and having the opportunity to participate.

As some people are champing at the bit, if it's not too much trouble, could you direct us to some links discussing parliamentary debate? Is the style used similar to the one discussed in this Wikipedia article?

A brief description is found under our files section. Top file. Moderators can tweak the format to suit the group that comes, of course.

Hey everyone. It's been a whiiile since I've been wanting to finally attend one of these debate meet-ups. I was originally a freshman in college when I first learned about this group. Now, I'm a senior and probably far less shy to meet others! I'll be glad to attend and see what this is like!

can someone plz post the topics we are gonna discuss at the meetup session?

As I said at the start of the last post, we tend not to do that. The topic will be agreed upon at the venue so that the people there all find it accessible.

Sounds better. I like "better to retire to the countryside than the city", myself.

Or something like, Which type of alcoholic beverage do you prefer, wine, beer, mixed drinks, etc.? The first thing the speaker would have to do is define what the objective is: inebriation, health, etc., and then s/he could build a short logical argument plugging in information that the average person has at his or her fingertips.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
