MOTION: This House Would send British combat troops into Mali
Background:
An alliance of Islamist rebels and Tuareg separatists is threatening to over through the Malian government. These fighters threaten not only the security of the people of the region (against whom they have inflicted terrible human rights abuses) but also the wider world. After all a lawless territory could be used as a base by terrorists to strike from.
However critics are challenging the morality of supporting a military dictatorship (that gained power by staging a coup against a democratic government) whilst highlighting the practical difficulties of intervening with such a small force. MP's have looked back to Afghanistan in order to warn of mission creep.
The Prime Minister has already ordered the deployment of British aircraft, intelligence assets and most importantly military personnel to Mali. Should this deployment continue? You decide.
Taking part:
Everyone gets a chance to speak in our public debates, although you can also just watch and enjoy the show if you'd prefer.
If you would like to get involved, simply send us a quick message at [masked] and let us know - our club is aimed at newcomers to debating and public speaking and we'd love to hear from you.
