Talk with a friend who'll be on a hoarding reality-TV show in March

A wonderful friend, Val, who has been challenged by clutter for years (and who came to some of our meetings a few years ago; she isn't in Meetup, though, so isn't part of our group) will be featured on a hoarding reality TV show on Wednesday, March 13, at 9 pm, and is inviting friends to watch that (I've just now learned that Val was also on Anderson Cooper’s Show, Anderson Live). The show is Hoarding: Buried Alive, on TLC cable TV:

Val mentioned that her case was selected for filming because her sisters also have clutter/hoarding challenges. I asked if she might consider talking with our Meetup group about the experience and her learnings from it, and she consented because so many of you showed interest. Recently some friends and I shared dinner with Val in her home (which now is lovely, warm- and very hospitable!) ... Val is a wonderful cook and gracious hostess, so we are hoping for more such times together there.

Might you be interested in coming to this Meetup, too, to learn about such an experience as Val has had? If so, what questions might you want to ask? Feel free to post as Comments below.

This meeting's fee is $5 per person, in part to encourage commitment because no-shows have been a challenge when meetings have been offered for free.

We then could also consider together, in person and as a group at the end of meetings like this, future programs for which B.U.'s Hoarding Project (Dr Gail Steketee's research team) or other specialists in clutter, organization, or other aspects of personal growth, could offer us insights and other helps ... I'd like to invite representatives from a variety of approaches to speak with us (the B.U. office has said that we just need to come up with program topics: they cannot do this for us).

Thank you for all input - including days of the week and times of day/evening that are most do-able for you to meet within the next few months.

Hoping to see you at this upcoming meeting! Participants are welcomed to leave early or stay later to talk further, as schedules require or as inspiration motivates.

Thanks to those who came, for the thoughtful discussion. I only wish that more of those who registered could have come.

I'm stoked to meet Val, Judy and everyone tomorrow.

If that changes, I'll update, but might be kind of last-minute.

Ugh! Didn't know it was scheduled for tomorrow. Looks like I won't be able to go. :(

Is Sunday, March 24, doable for those who would like to attend? Pls advise-

I just want to bring it to everybody's attention that this date is St. Patrick's Day, and there will be the Saint Patricks Day parade not far from this location. Traffic will probably be crazy.

THANKS, Rachel! I'll ask Val about an alternative Sunday-

Since several of you have suggested a Sunday meeting, I am inquiring about that possibility. Please indicate here if you cannot make the currently scheduled Saturday meeting, but would try to meet with us some Sunday in mid-March. Thanks!

I hereby so indicate. Thanks for inquiring about a Sunday!

I second that, prefer afternoon to morning as well.

I am currently listed as a yes to attend but may be detained out of state a few extra weeks so a mid March Sunday would be much better for me.

My available times just got much more restricted due to new employment (thankfully). Sundays are good for me. Any news on this front?

Since Esther can only attend on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, How about a sunday late afternoon?
Is anything happening with this event moving forward?

I know that those shows usually require prework with a therapist before they will agree to come in and tackle the clutter. Would your friend be willing to discuss what these required steps were and how she felt before and after compleation.

I would definitely be interested in attending and bringing my mother. She is a hoarder but is in denial. So I would love for her to see someone who was helped by a hoarding show. Would also want info on the hoarding project. Would be willing to pay.

Thanks Jeanne, I've left a message for my friend to see how amenable she might be, given the interest currently shown, then will contact Dr Stekatee's office. My friend greatly respects Dr Stekatee's work, so might be willing to participate in such a meeting just for an opportunity to engage one-on-one with her about this issue that is *so* close to home (literally). My friend had said she didn't think there would be sufficient interest in such a meeting, so we are gauging interest here just by proposing this meeting. -Of course, if you have other ideas for meetings that would be ESPECIALLY helpful to you, just suggest an idea for a meeting using the Meetup tool for that function (or let me know if you don't know how to use the tool), and we will see if there is sufficient interest among the membership: I am *very* willing to try all sorts of different events to learn what could be most helpful to our group's members...maybe Dr Stekatee could suggest ideas. So- please let us know. Thx!

Yes, yes, yes! I'd love to hear about your friend's hoarder TV show experience. I would pay $15 for a single session to listen and talk with both her and Dr. Steketee. Has Dr. Steketee or her office let the group know what an acceptable honorarium is for her (and for one of her staff)? If that's known, along with the amount for your friend, perhaps we can divide the total equally among us (agreeing among ourselves on the minimum number of attendees for it to be affordable). I'll let others define days and times because I'm quite flexible. Thanks!
