Introducing deep nature gardens and enclosed eco-farms

At our first meetup, let's get to know each other and visit a garden!

We'll visit a local deep nature garden and talk about what it is and how it works. Feel free to bring pictures or vids of your own garden.

We'll also talk about what an enclosed eco-farm is and how it works. As part of this topic, we'll have a look at a small composting system that is suitable for use inside such an eco-farm.

There will be lots of time for group discussion and questions.

You can read much more about deep nature gardens at deep nature gardens blog.

    Hi folks!

My apologies, this past week has been a bit over-busy and I've had to put a few things on hold, including the meetup planning.

I've just emailed Sanda to make sure she is still up for 6/16, and if so I'll schedule the next meetup at her eco-village. Hopefully I can get it scheduled today.

I'm excited about meeting there, because it looks like Sanda and her peeps have set up something truly special. Check it out:

Her place is in coastal San Mateo, easily accessible by freeway or by CalTrain (my preference!).

    Stay tuned...

Have to work most Saturdays. Any chance of a Sunday meetup?

Hi Dakini! Looks like we might have a meetup on Sunday, June 16 in San Mateo (at Sanda Everette's ecovillage). Could you join us for that one?

I want to also mention that I am offering a spring special on the free introductory consults. During the month of May your first 90-minute consultation also includes up to one hour of actual hands-dirty garden work! If you're looking for some practical advice on your garden's evolution towards greater beauty and diversity, here is a good opportunity to play in the dirt with me. Let's do it!

Nick, someone in my Nextdoor neighborhood group just asked for recommendation for someone to do landscape design, and I gave her your blog. I will email you her question directly.

Thanks, Sanda! I greatly appreciate the referral. May your gardens be lush!

For me it was a blast! I learned something interesting from each participant (including myself). I had been wanting to share some of what I've been learning and discovering, and doing that was also lots of fun. It was good to meet some new garden lovers. A big thanks to Mark and Sanda and Rebecca!

Enjoyed spending time with others passionate about gardening. Thanks for sharing some of your innovations, Nick. I appear to have 19 pictures. As soon as I go through them I will figure out how to get them to you.

I am going to come...maybe a few minutes late, but there is too much to do in the garden and my husband is not. We need to hopefully work our hives before the cooler weather next week.

Sorry to cancel. I will not return from my PacNW trip in time to attend. I hope to attend the next meeting.

With the meetup only two days away, I'm cleaning house and doing a few final prunes on the garden.

Everyone is invited to bring along a bag of kitchen scraps. Almost all cooking debris is okay, including meat and bones, but try to go easy on the fats and the paper products. I'll use your nutrient-laden donations to demonstrate the high-intensity composting system. Everyone is also welcome to accept a nice coffee can full of the finished product to try in your garden or farm.

I look forward to meeting some great local gardeners and farmers on Saturday!

I might be able to come, no commitments right now. We might want to tour my garden in the future.

We were planning a trip out of town for the weekend to see my husband's new granddaughter, but may be postponing a month....if we don't go, we will join you. Looking forward to meeting other gardeners as committed as we are.

    Hello everyone!

It's exciting to see the response to this new group. Already there are 22 of us! It's great how Meetup can help to create a new tribe almost overnight.

To those of you who can't make our first meetup, yes a Sunday meetup is doable as well as other times. We can try different times and days, so everyone can have a chance to join us.

If you are attending our first meetup on the 4th, please don't be alarmed by the incredibly sterile, ultra-mulched landscaping around my apartment. I didn't do it! It is the work of our property owner. My own happy little deep nature garden is between the two buildings, just left of the driveway, with a container garden and compost zone on the upstairs deck. We'll have a chance to explore all of this when we meet.

I look forward to meeting many of you soon. May your gardens be lush!

I can't make this meeting due to prior commitments. I've been part of an urban farming group in San Jose, but I live in San Mateo and would like to join a group closer to home. I hopw to meet with you soon.

Do not think I can come to this meetup due to prior commitments. But interested in this topic, and learning more about gardening.

    Hope I can make it.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
