Nothing like hitting the ground running... I look forward to meeting folks in this group, and for my first meetup suggestion, I'm hoping you all can help bring an independent film screening -- complete with Q&A/discussion with the Director & lead actor -- to Durham called "Janeane from Des Moines."
We've got until this Monday (ONLY TWO MORE DAYS!!) to sell enough tix to make it happen. We're using Tugg, which is sort of like kickstarter for movies. We need just 58 more folks to commit!
Here's the link to the Tugg site, where one can buy a ticket ($10): http://www.tugg.com/events/1802
Movie/discussion would then be Monday Oct 15th, 7:30pm, at the Carmike Wynnsong in Durham on MLK Blvd.
The film is kind of a "mockumentary" film. It follows a supposed conservative Iowa housewife whose life is falling apart and she turns to the GOP candidates for answers. They got some amazing footage of her with each of them (Santorum, Gingrich, Bachmann, Romney). The story line gets into areas of religion in the GOP/Tea Party, anti-gay and anti-abortion religious rhetoric... her husband turns out to be gay, and when he loses his job and their healthcare, she ends up having to go to Planned Parenthood (oh no! pffft) for help. It's quite a moment for her. And it opens up -- as the filmmakers hope -- a space for real conversation about these issues that crosses the party (and belief/secular) lines.
The lead actor and Director are willing to come out to Durham for a screening of the film and a Q&A/discussion after.
The film has received some great reviews. It has also stirred up conversation about ethics in making so-called mockumentaries. See this NYTimes article: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/01/movies/janeane-from-des-moines-mock-documentary-hits-the-right.html?ref=movies&_r=1&

If we can get 83 people minimum to purchase tickets, the screening and Q&A/discussion are a go! We're at 23 so far, and have this Monday (TWO MORE DAYS) to get to 83!
Let's make this screening happen! :)
