What: The Aspect Doctrine in Western Astrology
When: Saturday, June 11th, 2011 at 3:00 pm Brief Synopsis: There are four major components in a chart or horoscope: the planets, the signs of the zodiac, the twelve houses, and the aspects. During this meeting we will explore the technical and conceptual basis of the aspects in astrology by examining a set of definitions that date back to the 1st century. Extended Description from Chris: This month's meeting will have a mixed format that will involve a lecture that I will present on the original doctrine of aspects in western astrology, a group work session in which we read through a new translation of a 1st century text on aspects, and a group discussion in which we talk about some of the implications of the material covered and how it might alter or inform our chart interpretations. I just completed a two year project with Demetra George and Benjamin Dykes in which we reconstructed the original conceptual basis of the aspect doctrine in western astrology. I am very excited about the results, and so I thought that it would be good to share them with the group at the meeting this weekend. This is brand new material that has never been presented before in its entirety, so group members will be privy to the unveiling of something that has important implications for the practice of astrology in modern times. Some of the topics covered will include: 1) The conceptual basis of the aspect doctrine in ancient Greek optical theories. 2) The nature of the aspects. 3) The distinction between aspects on the right versus aspects on the left. 4) Complex aspect configurations such as enclosure and intervention. These are some of the main highlights, although quite a bit of other material will be presented during the course of the meeting. The topics covered should be suitable for beginner, intermediate and advanced students of astrology. I will be printing up a detailed several page handout for each attendee, so please RSVP if you plan on attending. The fee for the meeting is $5, part of which will go towards printing up handouts for each attendee. The meeting will last from 3:00 PM until about 5:00 PM. Follow the link below to RSVP: |
