This is the first in a new series of introductory classes on astrology that I will be doing over the next few months, first starting with basic concepts and then working our way up to more advanced techniques.

Several members of the group have pointed out that most of our normal meetings tend to focus on more advanced subjects, and that we needed some sort of beginner classes in order to help bring everyone up to speed. That is the purpose of this new series of classes that I'm launching this week. The classes will not replace the normal monthly group meetings that we have been doing for the past two years, but they will along run side by side with them as a supplement.

Class 1: Planets - Description

In our first class we will focus on the most basic element of astrology, the planets. The discussion will focus on their meaning and application in astrological practice, and how their significations can be drawn out by contrasting them with each other.

Since this will be our first class in the series we will also touch upon basic definitions of astrology, as well as its history and philosophy. By lightly addressing questions such as 'what is astrology' and 'are the stars signs or causes' we will create a strong conceptual foundation in order to be able to apply the actual techniques.

This is a beginner's class, although it is the first in what will be a continuing series, so even intermediate students may want to join us so that they have some sense of continuity as we progress on to more advanced techniques.

Future Classes

Here are the planned classes in the first part of the series, which will take place roughly every two weeks over the next couple of months:

Planets - their significations and meanings

Signs - the twelve segments of the zodiac and their qualities

Aspects - how the planets relate to each other in a chart

Houses - the twelve areas of an individual’s life

Each class will be about 2 hours long at the Mercury Cafe, although we will also have some additional readings, handouts and discussions in-between classes. I will be setting up a private discussion board on my website that students will have access to in order to discuss topics from the classes, as well as to download handouts and other reading materials.
