School-Supply Drive-- Now until Auguat 24th!!

The Secular Hub’s Community Service Committee will be holding a school-supply drive during July and August to benefit the students of Wyatt Academy, a K-8 school in the Denver Public Schools system – located just blocks from the Hub. Approximately 95% of Wyatt Academy students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, which gives the Hub, and our secular community as a whole, an excellent opportunity to provide materials to local students who may otherwise do without them. To find out more about Wyatt Academy, click here: http://www.wyattacademy.org/

The Community Service Committee will be collecting donations at the Hub, as well as at selected secular events held in the Denver area during these two months. Below is a list of items that are needed for the school’s middle-school students/scholars (they have requested that we focus on their older students for our drive).

Student supply needs:
Backpack (1)
Large eraser (1)
Pencil sharpener (1)
Box of pencils (2)
Box/package of pens; black or blue (2)
Spiral notebooks – college ruled (4)
Composition notebooks – college ruled (2)
Loose-leaf notebook paper – college ruled (4 packs)
3-ring binders; 2” preferred (3)
Plastic binder dividers (2 packs)
Plastic pocket folders (5)
School planner (1)
Yellow highlighters (4)
Index cards – lined (1 pack)
Post-its – 3inch (any color)
Plastic ruler – transparent (1)
Markers (1 pack, any colors)

Quantities in () are per-student needs. For notebooks, folders and binders, the school suggests solid-color covers, preferably not red or black. Very gently used binders, dividers and folders are acceptable.

All of us in the secular community understand the importance of education. And while school supplies may not be a critical factor in determining a student’s level of success, not having adequate supplies puts a student at a disadvantage from the start.

With a successful school-supply drive, we can have an immediate and direct, positive impact on the educational experience of Wyatt Academy students. Please consider helping as much as you can – whether you donate a single notebook, or everything listed above to cover one student’s needs – it all helps.

To donate, please look for the clear, plastic bin(s) near the Community Service display/table.

Thanks!!

p.s. We know that not everyone can easily get to the Hub. If you have any suggestions on other locations/times that would make donating easier, please let us know so we can consider all options.

wonderful people supporting the needs of the community. comical that the religious will accept support without question, but refuse to reciprocate.

Thanks to all of you that set up this effort! It gave me a very good reason to visit. I thought I was done buying school supplies, but happy to be wrong.
And thank you for the kind welcome for Keith and I. I hope to visit again.

Just wanted to say a quick, and very heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated to this drive. The school staff was thrilled with the supplies that were delivered - many children will be starting classes with materials they would have otherwise done without. So... thank you!!!

Never having had children, the cost of these supplies was an eye opening experience for me. I feel for low income, single parents.

Was no one going to tell me that I spelled August wrong? *sigh*

    It's been a hard summer....

Ruth - I was going to say something, but wanted to see if that creative, alternative spelling would catch on. If it's any consolation... summer is almost over.

The door is locked and I'm here with supplies.

Dan - my apologies that we were a little late getting things opened up yesterday - I hope you weren't waiting too long. Thank you so much for your generous donation - it will be much appreciated by the school. I know you couldn't stay around long yesterday, but I hope you find an opportunity soon to attend one of the Meetup events of any of the local groups (Denver Atheists, Secular Hub, HOC, FFRF).

No worries. It all worked out in the end. I was happy to get the school supplies out of my bedroom.

This is a great opportunity to help children, education, & the community. If the drive is during July & August, why is there a meetup on August 24 @ 7am (shudder!)?

Keep in mind that I am new to this group and have not been to any events. What times will the Secular Hub be open on Sunday for the donations?

      August 21

    • Scot S.

Dan - the Hub should be open no later than 10am on Sunday for the regularly scheduled Coffee and Community. People are usually there for a couple hours, at least. Thanks again for you support.

The office supplies stores like Staples and Office Depot are having some smoking deals on school supplies this week. I will be taking advantage of these sales for this event.

I just joined this group, so please let me know if I am overstepping. Anyhow, I found this unisex backpack on Amazon for cheap. There are other choices too. Would this backpack work for the students? http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B008HJY5MU

Oops. I already purchased a black backpack. Will it be rejected?

      July 21, 2014

    • Scot S.

I'm guessing not - I think the school will find uses for anything we can provide. If it's easy for you to exchange it, and you wish to do so, feel free... but please don't go out of your way. In either case, your support and generosity are much appreciated.

I support the American Atheists through Amazon's Smile program. I am going to try to secure these supplies through Amazon. Win-win.

I will bring a donation some time between now & 8/24.
