Christians "Unpacking" Atheism - with Lee Strobel

Hello all,

One of our members recently informed me that two well known Christian authors/debaters are coming to Cherry Hills Community Church to discuss and debunk atheism.  The title of the presentation is "Unpacking Atheism".  According to the website (http://chcc.org/institute_unpacking_athiesm.aspx):

"Strobel, Mittelberg and Dr. Craig will unpack the central claims made by those who deny God’s existence and discuss how we can best answer them. In addition, they’ll disclose inside stories of Dr. Craig’s landmark debates with many of the leading atheists and skeptics around the world. They’ll also interview other guests with fascinating stories of coming out of atheism to follow Christ.

Together we’ll answer the toughest challenges to our faith, hear stories of truth triumphing over doubt, and point people confidently toward trust in Christ."

This is the type of event every Atheist available needs to attend.  If for no other reason, than to let Christians know there ARE NO teachings of atheism and that we're all perfectly content living without religion and dogma.  I think it would be awesome for 100+ atheists to show up, listen, and...in a non-confrontational way, point out the fallacies of what is said, but also let the Christians there know how content we all our with our beliefs (or lack thereof).

If there is enough interest, we'll probably organize a pre-event meetup somewhere to share ideas and thoughts on how best to approach this event.

I hope you'll all join me in attending what I think will be a fun and interesting event.

Thanks for the heads up Ralph!

Eric

Panera works. Maybe we should just settle on Saturday at 3. If its just you me and Ralph I'm sure that will be great. But I'll post an event just in case others are interested. See you then.

I can do Panera but is there a location further West that works for Amy and Ralph, or anyone else? If Panera is best for others, though, that's fine with me.

    October 16, 2012

    • Ralph P.

I'm working near the Panera Bread but live on the opposite side of town. Anywhere will work for me.

      October 16, 2012

    • Ruth M.

I haven't lived in the area for long so I'm not familiar with the area. I just thought the Panera would be easier for people to find since it is near the church or some of us met there before hand.

Well, how about this: I will be a the Panera Bread in Highlands, 9579 S University Boulevard Highlands Ranch, CO 80126, on Saturday 10/20 at 3pm with all my notes from the discussion. If anyone else wants to join me to go over what the speakers said at the event or the answers to our questions please feel free to stop by.

For those of you interested so far in a follow up meeting, how is Saturday? Any time of day is good for me. It might be nice to get food or drinks, provided we could find some place quiet enough to talk. Any ideas on time or place?

    October 15, 2012

    • Ruth M.

We could just go back to the Panera Bread where some of us met before the event.

      October 15, 2012

    • Ralph P.

I'm working until 2 on that Saturday but after that I'd enjoy getting together.

    October 14, 2012

    • Albert

Ok thats just silly. i will not respond to it.

    • Sally A. M.

Albert, did you not recieve Eric's email of this afternoon?

      October 15, 2012

  • Albert

Fantastic. It reminded me of the brainwashing I went through in my past. It was a great refresher

    October 15, 2012

  • Charles S.

Myself and friend Carol were there for the main talk but were not able to stay for the Q + A. I'm just very interested on how that went and would like to report to our group, Free Thinkers Colorado Springs, about it. I'll try to keep up with your sight for info.

    October 15, 2012

    • Albert

I Wasnt able to as well. Anyone have a report on the goings on? Was it as ridiculous as the main speaker?

      October 15, 2012

  • Kevin S.

Is anyone interested in a sort of debriefing about this event? I think it would be interesting to discuss some of the philosophical arguments that came up last night and to talk about how well or poorly we did representing atheism.

    October 15, 2012

    • Ruth M.

I'd like to. I took as many notes as possible and there are a lot of things I would like to clarify or discuss.

      October 15, 2012

    • Todd A.

I'd be happy to. I can also arrange a conference call for those who the scheduling of the debrief doesn't allow to attend in person, if anyone would be interested.

      October 15, 2012

  • Doc P.

That's a great idea, Kevin. I planned to attend the event, but at the last moment was unable to. A debrief would be super. I'd like to hear more of what was said.

It was fun for the first time to look around at other atheists not bowed in church prayer!! I had hoped we would have the opportunity to stand up and represent. But that was clearly idealistic at a Christian witnessing mega-event.

What a bunch of loons. Where are they handing out this kind of Philosophy PHD? I want one.

So, the little white board 3 point thing-wasn't the first point of his perfect logic a conjecture or postulate, the logical derivative of which is a conjecture or postulate? it being key to the rest of his proof results in a large conjecture. Or do I just lack faith?

    October 14, 2012

  • Albert

Shit. I just had something come up. I cant stay. Shit

    October 14, 2012

  • Albert

They keep saying that atheism means that there is no moral truth when most of moral philosophy is based on secular moral truth. Immanuel Kant, John Stewart Mill, Aristotle, Socrates. This is basic college ethics.

Hello all. I'm glad to see so many people are coming tonight! Wanted to remind everyone that this event is being recorded and televised by Strobel. Please keep questions and comments polite and respectful. One of us losing our cool will only help their cause. If we're really better off as atheists we should demonstrate it. See you all tonight!

Hi, I'm from Freethinkers of Colorado Springs. Myself and several others I believe are coming up to lend support. Can you keep me posted as to a possible pre-event meetup. Thanks.

Hey todd. I dont like text-speak either but currently i am recovering from surgery and im unable to get to my computer so i am posting with my phone typing with one thumb. So text speak or spelling shortcuts make it far easier for me. Wow lots of aggression in this group.... geez
