What factors influenced you to emerge as a non-believer in a believing society?

I was raised Catholic in the NW burbs of Chicago. During school I made the gradual transition from catholic to christian to theist to deist to agnostic to atheist to Secular Humanist. I learned too much to beleive in god after reading the bible and the catechism and doing other religious and philosophical research.

What do you hope to get out of this group?

Like everyone else I want to find like-minded individuals that enjoy good conversation and debate. Whatever your beleifs/non-beleifs are lets talk about them and learn from each other. I love discussions with people that I know will not get offended when their ideas are challenged... Even better if you'd like to debate over a drink or five.

What do you feel you can offer the group?

I likely have a perspective similar to many; however, I can offer my ear, my mind and my respect in a conversation - hopefully we can fin something we disagree on! I can also offer emergency medical support as a paramedic if shit hits the fan :o)
