I took some college-level courses in my teens and was heavily influenced by many serious conversations among university-age-appropriate students from all around the world. I also read enough science and history to completely undermine Catholicism.
Having friends who don't say "God bless you!" or "We'll pray for you!" or "Let go, and let God!" or any other trite phrases.
I'm an American, but grew up and was educated in Germany and Austria. I feel that I can offer a somewhat non-parochial viewpoint -- the perspective of a World Citizen. Unlike here, being Atheist in other western democracies does not make one a pariah.
I've been an atheist for 48 years. I think our planet suffers from over-population and environmental degradation because believers think of the earth as a way-station to eternity instead of living this one life in a considerate, thoughtful way.
The people I've met at DAMG events are a uniformly interesting, diverse bunch! Chatting with individuals, I almost always learn something new!
