What factors influenced you to emerge as a non-believer in a believing society?

I don't necessarily think this really -is- a "believing society". I think a lot of people "believe" culturally rather than literally. That being said, I started questioning Christianity in particular when I was about 11, because nothing of what I'd been taught about it added up. I could not find satisfactory answers to those questions in either Christianity or any other religion I studied, and one day when I was 14, it struck me in a rather blinding moment that there really wasn't anything behind any of them. I didn't even know the word "atheist" at the time, but that's what I was. Several years later, I read The God Delusion, as well as began to listen regularly to The Atheist Experience, and decided I should "come out".

What do you hope to get out of this group?

Why should only the religious get to have a social group that gets together regularly? I'd like to have such a group, where I don't have to wonder if someone's going to get mad if I make a joke involving the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

What do you feel you can offer the group?

I offer humor, generally a reasonably intelligent conversation, and the occasional insight. I'm also a software developer, and could occasionally help in that vein, if need be.

Introduction

I am an atheist and secular humanist.
