What factors influenced you to emerge as a non-believer in a believing society?

Umm...Logic? Reason? Common Sense? I have seen the horrible atrocities committed in the name of religion, and my main goal in speaking up is to make people truly see that religion is not aimed at necessarily doing good for mankind, but to control it with fear and guilt. I want people to understand that religion is not a good thing, and it is very dangerous if used in any other way than not using it at all. A homophobic, perverted, racist, xenophobic, hypocritical, greedy, secretive, meglomaniacal institution with any other name than Christiany or Catholicism, etc, would never be tolerated in any society this side of hunters and gatherers. I am baffled on a daily basis how the religions of today sustain their grip on people.

What do you hope to get out of this group?

Communicating more about the topic; I am not really vocal about my lack of belief, so I don't get the opportunity to discuss this sort of thing often.

What do you feel you can offer the group?

What is the group looking for?

Introduction

I have been in Colorado pretty much my whole life, am ambitious and appreciate a solid high-five. Nietzsche and Maynard James Keenan started my curiosity into Atheism. Save a few, all religious people I have met reinforced this curiosity.
